FEBRUARY 2018: Anne Feeney's Fellow Travelers' Advisory, Volume 11, Number 5

2018? 

This is going to be a busy and exciting year. Donald Trump has done more to motivate activists than Nixon did.  If Hilary had won the election, we probably would have lost half of our resistance movement - they would have called on everyone to support our first woman president. Faced with a Republican majority in both houses, income equality would have intensified.  The Goldman Sachs crew would be among Hilary's chief advisors.  She might  have tried to save ObamaCare, but single payer was never on her agenda.  The wars would continue. The environment would continue deteriorating, although Hilary wouldn't have talked about "beautiful clean coal." It wouldn't be the horror show that 45 has visited upon us, but the complacency that would come with a Clinton victory would have hobbled the progressive movement.

I'm heading to Florida in a month to do five shows - If I want anyone to be there, I'd better get busy spreading the word, and I sure hope that you will, too.

THE SUMMER OF RESISTANCE TOUR CONTINUES!!

The Western Leg of the Summer of Resistance tour began on July 1st. I celebrated my birthday in Berkeley.  I have now circled the sun 66 times!  I feel great and it's a total joy seeing all my left coast friends. 

At Redwood Garden. Eliot Kenin, Amy Sue Berlin, Kendra Kinsey and I played for Peni Hall, Eleanor Walden, and many other friends and comrades.

Then on to the Monkey House with Chris Chandler!!  YAY!!

This is a totally wonderful venue that I hope to visit many times in the future.    Great sound, stage, lights, Green Room - the whole schmear. Brian McWilliams and a half dozen or more of my Irish tour alumni showed up in fine fettle, and the Fontbonne Academy Class of 1968 was well-represented, as well as many cherished Bay Area fans and plenty of new faces!

My journey to Mendocino started at the home of my gracious hosts, Shelley and Denny in San Mateo. That is one amazing, beautiful and challenging drive. Amy, Kendra Kinsey and I had a great time performing live on The Audible Feast on http://kzyx.org/  Richard Karch did a great job promoting the show, and we had a great crowd at the Community Center of Mendocino.  Suzanne and Chuck drove all the way from Laytonville to be there and it was utter joy to get an all-too-brief visit with them.

On to Ashland for a show sponsored by Health Care for All Oregon.  We had a near-capacity crowd and I got to spend a couple days with my terrific Ashland hosts, Mori and John. I have watched their boys, Max and Bronson grow up.  

From Ashland I went to Florence and had a great show at the Siuslaw Public Library. Amy an Kendra did a few numbers - they are just terrific.Stuart Henderson did a terrific job in organizing the event and it was a joy to see all my Florence hosts at the show, Diane, Ginnie, Ruth and this year's host-with-the-most Maggie!

I'm sending this newsletter from the beautiful Hill Country in central Texas.  This is day 16 of the (of the 18 day) Kerrville Folk Festival  - music-filled nights under the stars - post-show gatherings around campfires, where the music played often surpasses the music from the main stage. For those who come for the whole 18 days, by day 16 the sleep deprivation and dehydration wreak havoc on listeners and musicians alike.  People can be seen wandering in the wee hours muttering "I hate my job! I've got to do something else with my life!!"  Romances blossom and relationships begin.  

I am ready to go home and prepare for the exciting shows I have booked for this summer.  I hope I get to see many of you in Washington, DC, Massachusetts, Vermont, California, Oregon, Vancouver Island  or Vancouver itself. -- all of which I will visit during this tour.  If you don't live in or near any of the places I am playing, I bet you know someone who does.  Please forward this widely to any friends and relatives you have in places I'm visiting. MAY/JUNE 2017: Anne Feeney's Fellow Travelers' Advisory, Volume 11, Number 2

Welcome to the May/June edition of the Fellow Travelers' Advisory.  This is the best way that I know to keep in touch with all the folks I know.  I'm so grateful to all the friends, family, followers, folkies and fellow travelers who support my work and make my life possible. The "reply" function works, so please let me know what you're up to - especially if you have news my 10,000 subscribers would be interested in.  For example, last month my faithful subscriber and dear friend Barbara Lebeau suggested larger type - VOILA!

Utah Phillips' Caboose on the road again! https://www.generosity.com/education-fundraising/utah-phillips-flanger-railroad-car-restoration U Utah Phillips, "The Golden Voice of the Great Southwest," was indeed the greatest labor singer in North America in the past 60 years.  He's the only person alive that I would have allowed to say the same about me. May 25th marks the ninth year since Utah Phillips "caught the westbound." My friend Ron Kaminkow is another authentic working class hero.  For many years he has been doing the work and following in the footsteps of yet another working class hero: Eugene V Debs.  Ron became a locomotive engineer many years ago and he's been a daring activist for as long as I've known him... which is many many many years ago. Ron's been working for one big railroad union - a vision to which Debs devoted his life. I've been one of the ministers of culture to RWU -- Railroad Workers United -- along with the fabulous singin', pickin' and writin' Kentuckian locomotive engineer, JP Wright.  In addition to his union-building job and his locomotive engineering job, Ron has transported several cabooses and hauled them up Mt Shasta from the Oregon side.  He then repairs, restores and remodels them into small motel rooms intended for railroaders and hobos as a retreat. Utah's caboose is currently on the site of Philo Records in Vermont.  Transporting and restoring this railroad car is a monumental, and expensive challenge.  I hve no doubt the Ron and Utah's son, the wonderful Duncan Phillips can do this with our help. Theyhave launched this campaign.  Please support it! My awsome friend, journalist Julie Hauserman arranged a house concert for me in Tallahassee.   It was at the lovely home of Madelon and Jerry.  It was international women's day! When I got to Julie's house the night before the show, she was flattened with the flu. We didn't get much time to hang out and she was too sick to come to the concert.  Plenty of others joined us for a wonderful evening, and Julie is well again.
