FAMILY NEWS
December 2nd
Pittsburgh, PA
Hi there
Just packing for Texas and dreaming of Ireland. My Thanksgiving holiday was terrific. I had 13 for a sumptuous dinner, including a free-range, organic, locally grown heirloom turkey. My guests included my partner from Ireland, Tom Pigott. Tom and I have just finished planning the 2009 trips to Ireland and hope you'll join us for one of them.
Please visit http://cdbaby.com/all/unionmaid today and buy my CDs for the working class heros and sheros in your life. They make great holiday gifts and stocking stuffers!
If this was forwarded to you, you can subscribe to this monthly Fellow Travelers' Advisory by clicking on http://annefeeney.com/newsletter.html
Thanks for all your support for my music and all the great work you've done this year. 2009 is certain to be an exciting improvement!
Love, peace and solidarity
Anne
TEXAS
I hope if you know anyone in Kerrville, College Station, Austin, San Marcos or Corpus Christi that you'll tell them about my Texas tour. I'm so excited to have a trio to tour with. The song, "Dump the Bosses Off Your Back," which is the title track of my new CD, contains the lines:
Are you almost torn asunder?
Loaded like some long-eared jack?
Boob, why don't you buck like thunder and
Dump the bosses off your back!
All the agonies you suffer
You could end with one good WHACK!
Stiffen up you ornery duffer
and Dump the Bosses Off Your Back
I'll be touring with Oliver Steck on accordion and trumpet and his pal Gino Gottschall on tuba... Ornery Duffers to be sure. The instrumentation for this trio will allow us to be part circus band, part marching band, part symphony - and hard-to-miss! I wish I could afford to keep this band on the road all year long. Don't miss us!
IRELAND 2009!!
If you think it would be fun to come to Ireland with me for ten days, you're right! And now is the time to send in deposits for the 2009 tours. I've paired up with an extraordinary tour company - Enchanted Way Tours - so that I can proudly offer you the most authentic, affordable and exciting tours you'll ever find in Ireland! The dates for the 2009 tours are:
May 19th - 28th * Galway, Kerry and Clare * This was the first tour to sell out last year. You'll hear any Irish music fan talk about the music of Doolin, the Dingle peninsula, and Lisdoonvarna. We'll visit all three places. Fabulous music every night, and unforgettable scenery - including the Cliffs of Moher. This is the "best of the west" tour - the real Ireland!
June 27th - July 6th * Sligo, Donegal, Derry * This tour of the remote areas of the northwest coast of Ireland feature some of Ireland's most unusual and breathtaking scenery. We'll start in Yeats country - County Sligo and move on to Donegal - the Slieve League - and Malin Head, the northernmost tip of Ireland - with an optional boat tour to Tory Island. We'll also see the great city of Derry, the Bloody Sunday museum, the fantastic murals - and spend a wonderful evening at Sandino's pub.
August 25th - September 3rd * Galway, Dublin, Clare * - By popular demand, we've added a tour that includes Ireland's wonderful capital city, Dublin. This is a perfect tour for a first time visitor to Ireland. This extraordinary value also includes six nights in the west, where we'll see the Cliffs of Moher and hear great music every night.
The cost of these tours is $1950 per person based upon double occupancy and includes all ground transportation, all accommodations, all breakfasts, three dinners, and admission to many special events. The single supplement cost is $300. (You still have to purchase your airfare, travel insurance, lunches, and the other 6 dinners.) It's an incredible value. You'll find the accommodations charming and comfortable. Our 24 seat luxury coach is small enough to navigate the wee byways of the countryside. Our tours are flexible and designed to accommodate your needs and wishes. We'll pick you up and return you to Shannon airport.
I'm also pleased to report that your tourist dollar will go much further in Ireland than it did in 2008. First deposit of $500 is due by December 31, 2008. These tours will fill up quickly. Please drop me a line at anne@annefeeney.com, or call me at 412-877-6480 if you'd like to come with me. I'll be happy to answer all of your questions.
2009 School of the Americas Vigil

The annual vigil outside the School of the Americas in Columbus, GA drew 20,000+ demonstrators calling for the closing of our taxpayer-funded school of assassins. In the last election 35 congressional supporters of this school lost their seats. The mood was very optimistic that this could be the last year that this shameful institution is in existence. Write Barack Obama and ask him to close the School of the Americas (also known as WHINSEC).
And, as Pete Seeger says, "It's the singingest movement since the civil rights movement." Pat and Sandy Emma's Revolution were on hand, as were Chris Chandler, Charlie King and Karen Brandow, Joe Jencks, Rising Appalachia, Elise Witt, Colleen Kattau, the Chestnut Brothers, Los Vicios de Papa, Steve Jacobs, Mary Shapiro, Vientos del Pueblo, Francisco Herrera and Jon Fromer ... Chris Inserra's amazing organizing skills bring it all together and Maurice Turner's trumpet is awesome! Check out the SOAWatch website for more information.
FOLK LEGEND ODETTA DIES
Odetta, the folk singer with the powerful voice who moved audiences and influenced fellow musicians for a half-century, has died. She was 77. Odetta died Tuesday of heart disease at Lenox Hill Hospital, said her manager of 12 years, Doug Yeager. She was admitted to the hospital with kidney failure about three weeks ago, he said. In spite of failing health that caused her to use a wheelchair, Odetta performed 60 concerts in the last two years, singing for 90 minutes at a time. Her singing ability never diminished, Yeager said.
"The power would just come out of her like people wouldn't believe," he said. With her booming, classically trained voice and spare guitar, Odetta gave life to the songs by workingmen and slaves, farmers and miners, housewives and washerwomen, blacks and whites. First coming to prominence in the 1950s, she influenced Harry Belafonte, Bob Dylan, Joan Baez and other singers who had roots in the folk music boom.

FAMILY NEWS & DECEMBER BIRTHDAYS
December 2nd - Benjamin Mumphrey, Dec 6th - Olivia Grefenstette, Dec 11th - Mick Madera, December 12th - Dennis McCahill.

She is considerably more frail than when my sister and I surprised her on her 87th birthday, but still in remarkable spirits. You can drop her a card at:
Claire O' Connor - Eden Gardens
1385 Silver Bluff Road, Aiken, SC 29803
My son Dan and his wife, Monique Murad, leave for Quito, Ecuador in the early days of January, 2009. Monique has a fantastic job with USAID, and Dan will be finishing his last semester of law school in Ecuador. The State Department is sending a moving company to pack up all their wedding presents and Craig's List furniture for shipping on December 30th. They'll be living in a hotel until their departure on January 3rd or 4th of 2009. Quito has San Francisco-like weather, and, from all accounts, is a beautiful city. I hope to get there for a visit in the coming year.
My Texas tour this month will allow me to visit my daughter Amy at her new house in San Marcos, TX - I can't wait to see it. She got a great deal on the place, and she's in the process of creating a wellness center there - massage, accupuncture, sauna... sounds great!!
My cousin Jack Metcalfe, who lives in Germany, just sent this wonderful link to his son Patrick's band performance - he's the keyboard player and there's a great close-up at 2:40

SPECIAL READING OF BURIED: THE SAGO MINE DISASTER
SPECIAL READING OF BURIED: THE SAGO MINE DISASTER
Jerry Starr has been passionate about theatre and human rights all of his life. In 2006, he wrote BURIED: THE SAGO MINE DISASTER to illuminate the costs to worker health and safety of corporate greed unrestrained by government public interest regulation. BURIED is not a political screed, but an intimate portrait of the victims, survivors, corporate and government officials involved in the event in their very own words, as taken from hearings and interviews. It makes matters of life, death and grief personal in ways that are poignant, educational, and even amusing. BURIED was produced to excellent reviews in San Diego in 2007 and IUP in 2008.
In September, Jerry, 67 years old, although a nonsmoker, was advised that he had stage four lung, brain and spine cancer with only months to live. He shared this with his theatre friends, director Marci Woodruff and Mark Clayton Southers, Executive Director of the Pittsburgh Playwrights Theatre Company where Jerry had served as Managing Director. As a tribute, Mark decided to produce a staged-reading of BURIED on November 9 (8 pm) at the CLO Cabaret (Theatre District in the Cultural District.)
My friend Marci Woodruff has agreed to direct BURIED. For Jerry’s support, Marci recommended the Cancer Caring Center, an organization that had helped her and so many others in this community deal with this dreaded disease. So, the proceeds from BURIED are dedicated to support the excellent work of the Cancer Caring Center.
Actors donating their time and talent include Doug Mertz, Karen Baum, Bruce Hill, Debra Gordon and Ken Boldon. Fabulous music will be provided by Jack Erdie and Sue Powers. A suggested donation of $25 includes a post-show reception and can be made through the Center at 412-622-1212 or info@cancercaring.org .
The Cancer Caring Center is a local charity that has been providing free emotional support services to cancer patients and families since 1988.

Hi folks ...
It's great to be in Pittsburgh after so many months abroad. My
Danish, Swedish, Canadian and Irish friends are the best... but for
now, my attention is turned toward all you US citizens and the coming
election...
Sarah Palin's nomination tells us what we always suspected:

Many thanks to Holly Near for putting together an 11 day swing
through Ohio to Sing Out the Vote! I'll be joining the tour for the
last two days. If you live in Ohio, check out

VOTE OBAMA!
I just cast my absentee ballot for Barack Obama. I wish you had been
with me at the Greyhound Station in Pittsburgh the night that Barack
Obama made his acceptance speech ... the hope he generates is real. I
pray that it is not unfounded.
His health care plan is disappointing, his enthusiasm for the war in
Afghanistan is disheartening, his vote for retroactive immunity for
the telecommunications industry was disturbing. I intend to be his
harshest critic once we elect Barack Obama to be the first
African-American President of the United States. But first we have to
elect him.
There is no question that an Obama victory gives us more
opportunities than that of a McCain presidency - or worse still, a
Palin presidency.
The millions of workers whose lives are dramatically impacted by
appointments to the NLRB, OSHA and MSHA know that there is a huge
difference between the candidates. Obama's appointments to these
posts, the federal courts, the EPA and so many other agencies will
make for a better country almost overnight.
Voting is such a tiny part of living in a participatory democracy...
but it's still important. PLEASE VOTE FOR BARACK OBAMA.
It's stunning that our expensive electoral extravaganza accomplishes
over 3 years the same thing that Canadians achieve in 5 weeks at a
fraction of the cost. Publicly financed elections are the way to go!

Stop Execution of Troy Davis! Campaign
TELL THE GEORGIA GOV., LEGISLATURE, PAROLE BOARD, BUSH, OBAMA, MCCAIN, CONGRESS AND THE MEDIA: STOP THE EXECUTION OF TROY DAVIS!
Please join the online campaign to STOP THE EXECUTION! FREE TROY DAVIS NOW!
YOUR EMERGENCY ACTION IS NEEDED NOW! Click HERE to Fill in Online Form
Tell Gov. Perdue and the Georgia Parole Board:
STOP THE EXECUTION! FREE TROY DAVIS!
On Monday, October 27, Troy Davis, an African American on death row in Georgia, is scheduled to be legally lynched by the state of Georgia. Davis was convicted in the 1989 killing of a police officer despite what Amnesty International calls "overwhelming doubts about his guilt." No physical forensic evidence was presented at Davis' trial, and 7 of the 9 witnesses have recanted their testimony, with at least two saying they were pressured by police to finger Davis as the killer. Yet on October 14 the Supreme Court refused to allow a new hearing in his case. TAKE ACTION NOW using the form below to let the Georgia Parole Board, Governor, Legislature, and congressional delegation as well as President Bush, Senators Obama and McCain, U.N. Secretary-General Ban, Congressional leaders and members of the media know you demand No Execution of Troy Davis!
For more information, go to http://www.gfadp.org/TakingAction/TroyDavis/tabid/68/Default.aspx
Complete the following easy steps:
* Step 1: Enter your contact/signature information
* Step 2: Edit/tailor our sample letter to send, and
* Step 3: Send the message!
Sample Text (you will be able to edit it in step 2):
To: Governor Perdue, Georgia Parole Board, Georgia Legislature, Georgia Congressional Delegation, Senators Obama and McCain, President Bush, Congressional Leaders, U.N. Secretary General Ban
cc: members of the media
On Monday, October 27, Troy Davis, an innocent man, is scheduled to be executed unless you act to prevent it. He was convicted solely on witness testimony, and 7 of the 9 witnesses have since recanted, many alleging that police coerced them into making false statements.
I join with millions in the US and around the world in demanding that you Stop the execution of Troy Davis. Innocence matters to me. Justice matters to everyone.
I urge you to act now.
Sincerely,

SEPTEMBER!!
I've got to run for the airport to get the flight from Copenhagen to
Ireland, so this will have to be short. If you'd like to see this
with photos, it will be up on my blog soon at
http://fellow-travelers-advisory.blogspot.com/2008/09/october-2008-anne-feeneys-fellow.html
The month started off great at the Kerrville Wine and Music Festival,
where GREEN MOUNTAIN GRASS headlined this year. My daughter Amy's
significant other... Jesse Dalton... plays bass in the band. They
turned in a terrific set, and it was a joy to see them on the main
stage. Dalis Allen, director of the festival, invited me on stage to
say a few words about the meaning of Labor Day. I was delighted, and
honored.
We celebrated Amy's 27th birthday at the festival, and my son Dan and
his wife, Monique, were on hand to help with the celebrations.

Amy's 27th birthday party sushi boat!
After that, my friend Karen Newman came along with me for a great
whirlwind tour of the beautiful Oregon coast. Got in visits with
lots of wonderful friends and had a great time... then on the the
PEACE AND JUSTICE STUDIES ASSOCIATION national conference in
Portland. It was a fantastic experience. As soon as I have a few
minutes, I'll put live links on my blog to some of the amazing folks
who spoke there - ANN WRIGHT, KATHY KELLY, FELICE and JACK
COHEN-JOPPA, BERNARD LAFAYETTE, MARJORIE COHN, STEPHEN ZUNES, SAMI
RASOULI and more more more ... It was a tremendously moving
experience and I learned so much there.
From Portland, on to Malmo, Sweden for the EUROPEAN SOCIAL FORUM.
Thousands of activists from all over Europe converged on this
gorgeous town in southern Sweden... activists from the labor,
environmental, peace and feminist movements talking about food
security, an end to the war, declining labor standards, poverty,
patriarchy... it was a BLAST.
Then the most wonderful tour of Denmark. More later, but I am so
grateful to Gerd Berlev and Jan Lars Nielsen for their hospitality
and help here in Denmark.

FRANKLIN DELANO ROOSEVELT COMES TO LIFE in the capable hands of
historical dramatist R.J. Lindsey. Through extensive research, a
meticulous attention to detail and the use of only documented
speeches, letters and anecdotes, a vivid living portrait emerges.
Extensive experience as a teacher, researcher and actor have
contributed to the success of his living history programs which have
been seen from Jerusalem to London to the Democratic National
Convention. Lindsey draws upon a rich family history as a descendant
of ancestors who served in the Virginia militia during the Revolution
in 1776, settled the Great Plaines by covered wagon and joined the
Kansas Volunteers during the Civil War. As an educator, Lindsey
taught speech and theater for twelve years. As a theatrical
professional he has appeared on stage and television. His credits
include: She Stood Alone, Fatal Judgment, Will. He is a member of
Actor's Equity, the Screen Actor's Guild, and the American Federation

Why the Media Blackout on violence against Journalists at the RNC?
Subject: This is America. We don't jail journalists here.
Dear Friend,
Jailing journalists is unacceptable in a democracy. But that's exactly what is happening at the Republican National Convention in St. Paul, Minnesota.
Award winning journalist and host of "Democracy Now" Amy Goodman was arrested by St. Paul police while covering a protest outside the Republican National Convention. Though clearly identified as press, Goodman was charged with "obstruction of a legal process and interference with a 'peace officer.'" Two of her producers were arrested for "suspicion of felony riot."
To tell you that this arrest was brutal and upsetting simply doesn't do it justice. Watch this video to see for yourself. Then take action.
I just e-mailed the presidents of CNN and NBC News (which oversees MSNBC) to demand that their networks cover this important story. I hope you will too.
Please have a look and take action.

SEPTEMBER 2008 - Anne Feeney’s Fellow Travelers’ Advisory - VOLUME FOUR, 6
Greetings from Austin, TX!
Hi Folks:
I'm leaving in an hour for the airport to head off to the Oregon
Coast for an action-packed tour that ends in Portland at a fabulous
Peace and Justice Studies Conference featuring Ann Wright, Kathy
Kelly and Steven Zunes and lots of great music by me and David
Rovics.
all the details are posted at http://annefeeney.com/calendar.html -
PLEASE come to my Oregon gigs and/or tell your friends to come!
ANYONE FEELING ADVENTUROUS?
PLEASE consider a spur-of-the-moment decision to join this third tour
of Ireland! We've still got a dozen empty seats and a splendid time is
guaranteed. You arrive in Ireland on September 30 and return on
October 9th, having had the time of your life! (I promise!)
http://annefeeney.com/Pages/enchantedwaytours.html and a detailed
itinerary for this trip is at
http://www.enchantedwaytours.ie/?page_id=13
Here's a link to some great photos from the last tour by tourmate
Robert Howell
http://home.comcast.net/~irow/Ireland/
Drop me an email if you're interested. If you've got a passport and
an urge to travel I've got a fantastic offer for you.
UPCOMING TOUR INFO
From there it's off to the European Social Forum in Copenhagen, a few
gigs in southern Sweden and Denmark and then the final tour of Ireland
for 2008.
I'm booking TX for December. Then off to California, Oregon,
Washington and BC in Jan/Feb 2009. Some of these dates will be with
the fabulous REBEL VOICES - Janet Stecher and Susan Lewis. Let me
know if you'd like us to come to your town.
CHAOS IN THE TWIN CITIES
Amy Goodman and the Democracy Now crew were arrested in St Paul at
the convention. My friends Roy Zimmerman, David Rovics and the Prince
Myshkins are all on the scene.
Just what we needed - a gun-toting creeationist pro-life hunter with
a pregnant teenage daughter for the Republican ticket -- that ought
to attract the women's vote!
FAMILY NEWS - BIRTHDAYS
We celebrated my daughter Amy's 27th birthday (September 1) in style
throughout the 2008 Kerrville Wine and Music Festival. Her boyfriend
Jesse Dalton's band - Green Mountain Grass - performed the last night
of the festival and rocked the house! My son Dan returned to the
Quiet Valley Ranch for the first time since 2002 to help with the
celebrations and brought his wonderful wife Monique with him. It was
a great family weekend in Kerrville!
My husband has sold his house and moved to Kopparberg - about 30
miles from his hometown of Smedjebacken.
Christina Mumphrey - Sep 3, Mary Grefenstette - Sep 11,
Kris Deelane - Sep 12, Folk legend Faith Petric - Sep 13 1915, Tod
Faller - Sep 14, Mardy Weber McCahill - Sep 21, Mary Kerchner - Sep
25, Kay McCahill Mumphrey - Sep 25, Charlie Warren - Sep 27 2006
Keep my friend Robert Morrison in your thoughts. I heard he had a
terrible fall in Denton, TX just before this year's festival.

Tour Ireland with me! September 30-October 9th
plenty of seats on this tour, which will feature the best airfares of
the year

LABOR DAY 2008
The only place you'll be able to hear me sing this Labor Day is on
your stereo. I couldn't find any work. And it looks like my
colleagues are also unemployed this Labor Day Weekend. What's
happening to labor culture???
You would think that in such a crucial election year that labor would be taking advantage of Labor Day to present cultural events coast to coast that tell Labor's vision, history and values.
The best idea I've seen for the future of labor comes from my friend
Tom Geoghegan --
Six words could change the future for organized labor... find out
what they are at:

DID YOU KNOW...
Did you know that when you buy one of my CDs on CDBaby they send me a
cute email that says: Break out the Champagne!! Look who just bought a
copy of "Dump the Bosses Off Your Back!" (or "Union Maid" or "If I
Can't Dance" or "Heartland" or "Look to the Left" ... you get the
idea..) and it gives me your name, info, and any message you've left
for me. It's so exciting and such a lift to get those emails! I love
it!!
So please, go to http://cdbaby.com/all/unionmaid and get one of my
CDs for yourself, or as a gift for the working class hero in your
life. Put some labor culture into your Labor Day celebrations.

SWEDISH PRESS
Since my arrival in Sweden I've had a dozen or more press interviews
and reviews... (here's a link to a nice one about a wonderful
festival I played in Skellefteå -- 700 miles north of Stockholm --
just a couple hours south of the Arctic Circle.)
http://norran.se/noje/article144681.ece
The one that made me laugh out loud was a story where the (very)
young reporter asked me to describe my music. I replied that it was
very much in the spirit of Pete Seeger. Her face was blank. So I
wrote down his name for her and suggested that she look him up. I
told her a little bit about Pete and his music and his work.
Apparently she didn't have time to look him up. The next day the
article said, "When I asked her to describe her music, she said that
she sounds like an 89 year old man who is still performing."
BOOKS
I'm reading Les Leopold's wonderful biography of Tony Mazzochi - The
Man Who Hated Work and Loved Labor: The Life and Times of Tony
Mazzochi. God how I miss Tony Mazzochi - a real visionary.
And as soon as I've finished it, I'm ordering
Steve Ellner. Rethinking Venezuelan Politics: Class, Conflict, and
the Chavez Phenomenon. Boulder and London: Lynne Rienner, 2008 from
Powell's Books.
There is so much crazy stuff being written about Hugo Chavez, but Kim
Scipes' thoughtful review
http://mrzine.monthlyreview.org/scipes170708.html convinced me this
is the book I want to read about what's going on in Venezuela -- and
South America.
The Shock Doctrine is out in paperback now. If you haven't read
Naomi Klein's book, I'm sure that you'll find it very interesting.

STANDING IN THE WAY OF PROGRESS?
These young activists in Indiana need some bail and legal defense
funds. Any group that wants to dance/march into the Cato Institute
has got my support!

FAMILY NEWS!
I missed a July family birthday -- the Duncan triplets, Emma, Tara
and Colin -- turned three in San Diego on July 16th.

It's Emma, Colin, Tara and big brother Connor ...
They'll be getting a new cousin, too, we hear! Katie and James
McCahill are expecting...
And Kristin Brown and Anthony Blanco will be providing little
Antonito with a sister or brother in February...
Jody Brown has moved to Hong Kong to work for EDAW.
Monique Murad and Dan Berlin will be moving to QUITO, Ecuador very
soon. Monique will be working for USAID there, and Dan will do his
last semester of law school at 10,000 feet in Ecuador.
Monique and Dan, and my daughter Amy Berlin and her sweetie Jesse
Dalton and I will all be together at the Kerrville Wine and Music
Festival, August 28-Sept 1st. I'm soooooo looking forward to that!
And Iron Man Dan Berlin turned in some respectable scores in The
General Smallwood Triathlon .. He had to swim 1500 meters, bike
24.9 miles, run 6.2 miles ... ouch! He finished 11th in his age
group (25-29) and 73rd overall... you can check his scores at:
http://www.setupevents.com/files/GSI_AGMen_08.html
And my darling Amy was called upon to officiate at a wedding ceremony
in Mexico last month when the shaman who was supposed to perform the
ceremony was unable to attend!!
Julie is putting his house on the market ... we're painting and
packing and sprucing the place up... he's going to move to
Kopparberg... a little town about 30 miles from here .... A dear old
friend of his has bought a gorgeous estate and is setting it up as a
sort of hippie retirement commune... We'll have a five room
apartment there... It's an idyllic spot. It's bittersweet to leave
this house and Smedjebacken behind us... luckily it's not very far
behind us... we can come back to see friends any time we like...
