Greetings from Austin, TX!
Hi Folks:
I'm leaving in an hour for the airport to head off to the Oregon
Coast for an action-packed tour that ends in Portland at a fabulous
Peace and Justice Studies Conference featuring Ann Wright, Kathy
Kelly and Steven Zunes and lots of great music by me and David
Rovics.
all the details are posted at http://annefeeney.com/calendar.html -
PLEASE come to my Oregon gigs and/or tell your friends to come!
ANYONE FEELING ADVENTUROUS?
PLEASE consider a spur-of-the-moment decision to join this third tour
of Ireland! We've still got a dozen empty seats and a splendid time is
guaranteed. You arrive in Ireland on September 30 and return on
October 9th, having had the time of your life! (I promise!)
http://annefeeney.com/Pages/enchantedwaytours.html and a detailed
itinerary for this trip is at
http://www.enchantedwaytours.ie/?page_id=13
Here's a link to some great photos from the last tour by tourmate
Robert Howell
http://home.comcast.net/~irow/Ireland/
Drop me an email if you're interested. If you've got a passport and
an urge to travel I've got a fantastic offer for you.
UPCOMING TOUR INFO
From there it's off to the European Social Forum in Copenhagen, a few
gigs in southern Sweden and Denmark and then the final tour of Ireland
for 2008.
I'm booking TX for December. Then off to California, Oregon,
Washington and BC in Jan/Feb 2009. Some of these dates will be with
the fabulous REBEL VOICES - Janet Stecher and Susan Lewis. Let me
know if you'd like us to come to your town.
CHAOS IN THE TWIN CITIES
Amy Goodman and the Democracy Now crew were arrested in St Paul at
the convention. My friends Roy Zimmerman, David Rovics and the Prince
Myshkins are all on the scene.
Just what we needed - a gun-toting creeationist pro-life hunter with
a pregnant teenage daughter for the Republican ticket -- that ought
to attract the women's vote!
FAMILY NEWS - BIRTHDAYS
We celebrated my daughter Amy's 27th birthday (September 1) in style
throughout the 2008 Kerrville Wine and Music Festival. Her boyfriend
Jesse Dalton's band - Green Mountain Grass - performed the last night
of the festival and rocked the house! My son Dan returned to the
Quiet Valley Ranch for the first time since 2002 to help with the
celebrations and brought his wonderful wife Monique with him. It was
a great family weekend in Kerrville!
My husband has sold his house and moved to Kopparberg - about 30
miles from his hometown of Smedjebacken.
Christina Mumphrey - Sep 3, Mary Grefenstette - Sep 11,
Kris Deelane - Sep 12, Folk legend Faith Petric - Sep 13 1915, Tod
Faller - Sep 14, Mardy Weber McCahill - Sep 21, Mary Kerchner - Sep
25, Kay McCahill Mumphrey - Sep 25, Charlie Warren - Sep 27 2006
Keep my friend Robert Morrison in your thoughts. I heard he had a
terrible fall in Denton, TX just before this year's festival.

LABOR DAY 2008
The only place you'll be able to hear me sing this Labor Day is on
your stereo. I couldn't find any work. And it looks like my
colleagues are also unemployed this Labor Day Weekend. What's
happening to labor culture???
You would think that in such a crucial election year that labor would be taking advantage of Labor Day to present cultural events coast to coast that tell Labor's vision, history and values.
The best idea I've seen for the future of labor comes from my friend
Tom Geoghegan --
Six words could change the future for organized labor... find out
what they are at:
http://www.denverpost.com/opinion/ci_9988069

DID YOU KNOW...
Did you know that when you buy one of my CDs on CDBaby they send me a
cute email that says: Break out the Champagne!! Look who just bought a
copy of "Dump the Bosses Off Your Back!" (or "Union Maid" or "If I
Can't Dance" or "Heartland" or "Look to the Left" ... you get the
idea..) and it gives me your name, info, and any message you've left
for me. It's so exciting and such a lift to get those emails! I love
it!!
So please, go to http://cdbaby.com/all/unionmaid and get one of my
CDs for yourself, or as a gift for the working class hero in your
life. Put some labor culture into your Labor Day celebrations.

SWEDISH PRESS
Since my arrival in Sweden I've had a dozen or more press interviews
and reviews... (here's a link to a nice one about a wonderful
festival I played in Skellefteå -- 700 miles north of Stockholm --
just a couple hours south of the Arctic Circle.)
http://norran.se/noje/article144681.ece
The one that made me laugh out loud was a story where the (very)
young reporter asked me to describe my music. I replied that it was
very much in the spirit of Pete Seeger. Her face was blank. So I
wrote down his name for her and suggested that she look him up. I
told her a little bit about Pete and his music and his work.
Apparently she didn't have time to look him up. The next day the
article said, "When I asked her to describe her music, she said that
she sounds like an 89 year old man who is still performing."
BOOKS
I'm reading Les Leopold's wonderful biography of Tony Mazzochi - The
Man Who Hated Work and Loved Labor: The Life and Times of Tony
Mazzochi. God how I miss Tony Mazzochi - a real visionary.
And as soon as I've finished it, I'm ordering
Steve Ellner. Rethinking Venezuelan Politics: Class, Conflict, and
the Chavez Phenomenon. Boulder and London: Lynne Rienner, 2008 from
Powell's Books.
There is so much crazy stuff being written about Hugo Chavez, but Kim
Scipes' thoughtful review
http://mrzine.monthlyreview.org/scipes170708.html convinced me this
is the book I want to read about what's going on in Venezuela -- and
South America.
The Shock Doctrine is out in paperback now. If you haven't read
Naomi Klein's book, I'm sure that you'll find it very interesting.

Monster: Who Really Killed the Knoxville Unitarians?
By RJ Eskow Posted July 28, 2008
Top of Form 1
Bottom of Form 1
I'd say that Unitarians were God's thoughtful people, but they make no particular claims about God. In some parts of the country that takes real courage.
My first wife and I joined a Unitarian church in suburban DC and raised our kids there. She and I were from different religious backgrounds - in a way, I was from different religious backgrounds, raised in Judaism but with Catholic and Southern Baptist relatives. We both practiced Buddhist meditation (and found others there that did the same.)
Unitarians tend to be intellectual, verbal, literate, thoughtful, and from a variety of backgrounds. Some are atheist, some are agnostic, others believe in God in a variety of Eastern and Western forms. Some would describe themselves as "ethically Christian," although others would not - and it is not an exclusively Christian group. The running joke among Unitarians was that the name "Jesus" is only heard when someone falls down the stairs, and that the only sacrament is the black coffee brewed after services.
The Unitarian Universalist (or UU) denomination is the product of a merger between Unitarianism and Universalism, two centuries-old Christian denominations. Unitarianism was founded on the belief that the Trinity was illogical and that there could only be one divinity. Universalists believed that God was too merciful to condemn anyone to an eternity in hell, and that even the most evil person would get out of there eventually (after fifty thousand years or so). Eventually they merged and abandoned all dogma. (You can read the Knoxville church's website for a summary of beliefs.)
When my work sent me to Hungary, I arrived in the only nation on earth that ever had a Unitarian state (during the reign of King John Sigismund, who decreed religious tolerance in 1568). Ralph Waldo Emerson is the closest thing to a saint that UU's have. An ordained minister in the church, his Harvard Divinity School address was revolutionary in its day.
Emerson rejected all claims of the supernatural in the Bible. He said that miracles were "monster," in the original meaning of that word as "against nature." In a characteristically striking turn of phrase, he said they were "not one with the blowing clover and the falling rain." Emerson was telling us that the beauty of the manifest world should be enough.
Is it worth killing a person for believing that?
My current (and future) wife and I were married by the Rev. Forrest Church at All Souls Unitarian in Manhattan. (Dr. Church is now teaching us how to face death.) When at several points in my career jobs came up in the Deep South, I always checked to see if there was a Unitarian Church nearby. One of those job possibilities, which I chose not to pursue, was in Knoxville.
Jim Adkisson of Powell, Tennessee was the man with his finger on the trigger. He had mental health problems, and a hard and bitter life. He apparently left a letter explaining that he hated the church for its liberal beliefs and opinions. And the church had a sign outside indicating it welcomed gays and lesbians.
Who really killed those Unitarians? Was it the preachers who spread hatred and intolerance? The politicians who court and flatter them instead of condemning their hate speech? The media machine that attacks liberals, calls them "traitors" and suggests you speak to them "with a baseball bat"? The economic system that batters people like Jim Adkisson until they snap, then tells them their real enemies are gays and liberals and secular humanists?
If you ask me, it was all of the above.
You killed them, Pat Robertson. You killed them, Pastor Hagee. You killed them, Ann Coulter. You killed them, Dick Morris and Sean Hannity and the rest of you at Fox News.
The shooting began while the children of the church were putting on a musical based on "Annie." One broad-shouldered church member blocked the bullets from hitting other people, and died. You don't need to believe in dogma to be a hero. Remember that song from "Annie"? It probably got on your nerves like it got on mine. "The sun'll come out tomorrow."
The sun coming out. That's natural. It's one with the blowing clover and the falling rain. But a man driven insane, then programmed by society to kill people just because they're loving and tolerant?
That's monster.

ACT NOW for justice in Zimbabwe!!
Lovemore Matombo and Wellington Chibebe, the President and General Secretary of the Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) were arrested on 8 May for speaking out about the state-sponsored violence in Zimbabwe - or as Robert Mugabe's government put it "spreading falsehoods prejudicial to the State".
Lovemore and Wellington are due to appear in court on 30 July, to defend themselves against these charges. Over 2,000 trade unionists from around the world have come together to make a public demonstration of support for the ZCTU leaders and all unionists in Zimbabwe.
Please take a moment to add your voice to this growing tide of support for these brave trade unionists. Everyone can do something to help --

Racism by any other name...
To the New Yorker:
I am a satirist (musical) myself. I am married to a visual artist who does satirical political cartoons here in Sweden. As artists, we are constantly defending freedom of expression. HOWEVER, if this picture had appeared on the front page of any mainstream or conservative publication, it would have been correctly identified as what it is: Right wing racist propaganda featuring slanderous stereotypes.
Instead, you have sullied the pages of the illustrious New Yorker with this disgusting image, leaving the media to hail this as "satire."
Satire reveals truth. This image obfuscates the truth -- in an era when truth becomes increasingly harder to find.
It doesn't matter what sort of articles appear inside the magazine. You are perpetuating villainous public falsehoods designed to manipulate the fear and ignorance that abounds in this country. That ignorance abounds in large part due to a COMPLICIT media that does NOTHING to shed light on the real issues.
Next month's cover should be an apology and a clarion call for a more vigilant media.

REPORT FROM THE FIRST IRELAND TOUR
There were 21 of us on this first tour of Ireland - a real international group we were, too! Irish, American, Swedish, Canadian & Danish - and now all friends for life! We went to Kerry, Clare and Galway.
(This group photo taken by Tom Pigott on Guy Zahller's camera...)
We visited Padraic Pearse's summer house, a dozen fabulous pubs to hear traditional music and ballads, the Cliffs of Moher, Lady Gregory's house at Coole Park, and took in some of the most amazing scenery Ireland has to offer... AND ... we made some great music of our own!

I sure didn't have to do all the singing on this trip! Our tour was enlivened by the musical presence of Nell and Laurie Postans and Molly Newman of Victoria, BC as well as the singing of our fearless tour leader, Tom Pigott, birthday girl Marie Berlev of Copenhagen, Denmark and Nettie (also celebrating her birthday on this trip!) Sabin and Linda Turney of Chicago - and really, when we all sang together - (frequently) - it sounded great.

My husband, Julie Leonardsson, took great photos and made many wonderful sketches during the tour... You can see them at:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/annefeeney/sets/72157605809447284/
And our Danish friends have posted their photos at:
http://rejser.berlev.dk/#2.0
We had plenty to celebrate on this tour. On June 11th, we were overjoyed to learn that the Raytheon 9 were acquitted.
"The six anti-war activists who occupied arms manufacturer Raytheon's offices in Derry and destroyed its computers have been acquitted by a jury in Belfast.
Derry Anti War Coalition calls on the office of the Attorney General and the Crown Prosecution Service, in light of the jury's verdict of 'not guilty' to criminal damage charges, to institute an investigation into the activities of Raytheon at its various plants across the UK, with a view to determining whether Raytheon is a criminal enterprise."
Read the full article, as well as the powerful statement of the Raytheon 9, that begins...
"We said from the beginning that we came to this court not as the accused but as the accusers of Raytheon."
http://www.indymedia.ie/article/87945
... There was NOTHING about it in the Irish Times - Ireland's major daily.
Then, on the 13th of June, Ireland overwhelmingly rejected a militarised corporatized federal Europe and defeated the "Lisbon Accord." In Clifden my friend Niall Farrell, who had been working tirelessly for the treaty's defeat, filled everyone in on all the details and explained why the defeat of the treaty was a victory for working people everywhere.
In that case, the vote was widely covered in the media as a huge "embarrassment" for Ireland, and a "failure." Perhaps, the pundits opined, the people were too stupid to understand how important it was to vote YES... perhaps there should be another vote to see if they could get it right.
It's obvious that media consolidation is burying the truth everywhere, not just in the United States.
Anyway, the tour was exhilarating and uplifting! I wish you could have all been there!

FISA FILIBUSTER
As I'm going to press with this issue it looks like there may still be some hope to stop this latest hateful version of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act - retroactively legalizing the Bush administration's warrantless wiretapping program.
Call your Senators today and ask them to support the Feingo-Dodd filibuster and oppose any version of FISA that grants retroactive immunity for warrantless wiretapping.

PRICE HIKE COMING ON LAST TOUR OF IRELAND IN 2008
The September tour of Clare, Kerry and Cork is filling up.
Your $1750 tour cost includes all ground transportation, all hotels, all breakfasts, three dinners, and many extras. If you reserve now, or if you've already reserved a seat on this tour, you are still guaranteed the original rate of $1750. This is a fantastic bargain, as anyone who has travelled recently in Ireland can tell you.
http://www.annefeeney.com/Pages/enchantedwaytours.html
is the link on my webpage to describe the tours..
http://www.enchantedwaytours.ie/?page_id=13
particularly describes the Clare, Kerry and Cork tour.
Unless the dollar makes a huge comeback between now and the end of July, my Irish partner, Tom Pigott, has asked me to raise the price on this tour of Ireland, which begins on September 30, 2008 and ends on October 9, 2008. We'll decide closer to the end of the month how much we need to raise the tour cost to compensate for the dollar's shrinking value abroad ... but if you've been seriously thinking about this tour, now would be an excellent time to commit. The price will go up on August 1st.

DONEGAL WOMAN - A BOOK
I just finished reading "Donegal Woman," by activist Séan Throne. It's a vivid depiction of rural life in Donegal at the turn of the 20th century, to which Throne has a very personal connection. Born in Lifford, Co. Donegal, Throne was involved in the civil rights movement in Derry and an eyewitness to Bloody Sunday in 1968. Throne now lives in Chicago. Donegal Woman is a combination of family history, historical fiction, manifesto and documentary -- I found the book very compelling. If you'd like to order a copy, the book is $23. You can order it directly from the author - loughfinn@aol.com - and have it signed by the author.

UTAH PHILLIPS (1925 - 2008)
How lucky we are that Bruce "Utah" Phillips was so very generous with his time, his music, his humor and his wisdom. He has left all of us with so much. Seventy three years does not seem very long to me any more. I will feel forever grateful to him for the time he shared with me. My heart breaks for his wonderful wife, Joanna Robinson, and all his family and friends. It somehow seems appropriate that Utah's gigantic heart was his weakness... He had a tremendous love for us all. This is the link to the obituary in the New York Times

Don't Pay the Ransom -- I've Escaped!
Thanks so much to everyone who has expressed concern for me during this health scare.. Your kindness means more to me than I can express... here's the latest...
I got home from the Susquehanna Music and Arts Festival at 8 last night. I listened to my "Stress Free Surgery" cassette and began fasting at midnight.
I went in for the surgery this morning... was fitted with the IV and taken to the sonography suite and given a topical anesthetic while they inserted a wire into my bosom to mark the path to the metal marker they implanted when they did the biopsy.
Next it was on to the mammography suite to get films to make sure that the wire was actually AT the metal marker.
That proved to be difficult to the point of impossible ... the 'spot' was very hard to find because it got sooooooooooooooo small after the biopsy.
From there we went back to the surgery suite... The anesthesiologist came in, discussed all the medication I would be receiving and I signed all the consent forms.
My surgeon came in prior to the trip the O.R. and after some discussion my doc said she wasn't 100% committed to the idea of doing the surgery today.
Soooooooooooo, we're going to watch this lump for a few months and see what happens...
A REPRIEVE!!!
TA DA!!
I'm delighted...
So far the keyword for this adventure isn't "scary" or "painful"... it's EXPENSIVE...
