"Buried: The Story of the Sago Mine Disaster" comes to San Diego!
My friend Jerry Starr has written a powerful play about the Sago Mine disaster ... His play was selected for inclusion in the Resilience of the Spirit Human Rights Festival 2007 in San Diego. I get to serve as the musical bridge between scenes, and I'm really honored to be part of this production. It's inspired me to write a couple new songs already and I'm hatching a couple more in time for this production at the 6th and Penn Theater in downtown San Diego. We'll be doing four performances - August 9th-12th. The cast features many extremely talented Equity actors and accurately tells the story of how these 12 miners' deaths were preventable ... The play also tells of the courage of the miners' wives during the disaster and in its aftermath.
If you know anyone who lives near San Diego, tell them not to miss this fabulous production. Details are below with the tourdates.

COME TO IRELAND WITH ME!
Almost 80 of you have expressed interest in my 2008 "Music, Politics, Poetry and History Tours of Western Ireland." My partner in this enterprise, Tom Piggot, is at this moment taking another tour group around western Ireland with my friend and colleague Johnsmith, but promises to send me a detailed day-by-day description very soon.
If you think you'd like to try a nine day tour of Ireland with me and Tom in 2008, send me an email - anne@annefeeney.com - and I'll send you detailed information. I love being in Ireland and these tours will also make it easy for me to spend more time in Sweden with my husband in 2008.
The $1750 cost of the tour includes all accommodations (usually small hotels), breakfasts, ground transportation (in a comfy tourbus), three evening meals and admission to numerous points of interest, as well as stipends for our poets, historians and musicians.
The $1750 does not include your transportation to Ireland, the other evening meals, lunches, snacks, pints of Guinness (optional, but highly recommended!), tips, etc.
After my tour of Ireland in September of 2006, I can attest that this is a terrific bargain for what you'll get... and you folks on my mailing list are incredibly cool... I can't wait to introduce you to each other! We'll have a ball... and if there's something in particular that you want to do while you're there, we'll try to include it in the tour...

JACKIE BROWN (1964-2007) REMEMBERED
In my December 2006 Fellow Travelers' Advisory I asked you to consider contributing to the mayoral campaign of Jackie Brown in Jacksonville, Florida. Jackie was a brilliant community leader with a great sense of humor and a fabulous flair with the media.
I was stunned to learn that my friend Jackie Brown died on Sunday, July 15th ... She was only 43. When I had breakfast with her in March she didn't mention that she was battling breast cancer. You can read more about her too-short life by clicking on the link below.

Dear Folks:
Thanks for reading my news... Your support and interest in my music
make my work possible, and I really appreciate it.
This has been a month of the highest highs and lowest lows. My heart
is overflowing with joy for my son and his wonderful bride - the
wedding was unforgettable...
The food, the dancing, the merriment - tremendous! a great gathering
of family and friends. I really hope to have some pictures to put on
the blog soon.
And my heart is breaking from the loss of a dear friend to us all,
whether you knew him or not.. I hope you'll take a minute to read
about my friend Berk Snow.
It's been my privilege to work with some amazing activists in this
last month... at the National Organization of Legal Services Workers
and the Hospital Employees Union of British Columbia ... I still
have two union summer schools ahead of me - always sources of
inspiration - and the 2008 tours of Ireland will be fantastic... and
if you're in or near Seattle, or know someone who is, send them to two
last minute add on concerts on June 30th and July 5th

BERK SNOW REMEMBERED
I was utterly devastated to get the news that my dear friend Berk
Snow died suddenly and tragically on the 14th of June. Berk was the
host of Wild River Radio on KMUD-FM in Garberville, California. I
first met him on tour with Connie Cohen in January of 1993. We became
instant friends. Berk was a powerful spirit and a truly gentle man -
a vibrant voice and extraordinary and generous supporter of community
radio, the environment, and political songwriters and activists.
He also loved to fly. On June 14th he and his life partner,
companion and true love of more than 30 years - Suzanne Beers -
were on a short pleasure flight in Berk's single engine Cessna 172.
The plane crashed in a canyon in wildest Idaho, near the Oregon
border.
Even though he lived for several hours after the crash, our dear Berk
never regained consciousness. Miraculously, his beloved Suzanne
sustained only moderate compression fractures of her spine and some
relatively minor cuts. Suzanne then survived four days and three
nights in this rugged and isolated terrain until she was spotted by a
rescue team, and evacuated to safety.
Berk was a year younger than I - Additional details and photos are
posted at the KMUD website -- Berk touched the lives of so many people
- in his home community in Humboldt, at Folk Alliance, at the National
Association of Community Broadcasters, at the Kerrville Folk Festival,
at Burning Man, at the Oregon Country Fair, and throughout the world
of community radio and political activism.
Our community has sustained a terrible loss. My heart breaks for
Suzanne, and all those who loved Berk.

SCHOOL OF THE AMERICAS ALMOST HISTORY
On June 21st funding for the School of the Americas was authorized by
a mere 6 votes... We get closer than ever to closing that monstrosity.
203 members of Congress supported the amendment to cut off funding...
the most ever!

VICTORY IN BC
The Hospital Employees Union of British Columbia, Canada, won a huge
victory when the Canadian Supreme Court announced that Collective
Bargaining is a human right guaranteed by the Canadian Charter of
Rights and Freedoms. The 6-1 decision declares as unconstitutional
the infamous Bill 29, which stripped Canadian hospital workers of
their collective bargaining rights and provided for massive layoffs
and contracting out in health care.
I got a chance to perform at the Hospital Employees Union summer
school and had a fantastic time with this terrific group of
activists. I wrote a song for the convention called "We Fought Back."
I'll be posting the lyrics and, I hope, an mp3 to the blog soon.

IRELAND UPDATE
Most of you are very familiar with my love of Ireland, Irish music,
politics and poetry... Many of you wrote to say that you wished you
could have come along on my 2006 tour of Ireland. I'm very pleased to
report that you are all invited to come along on my 2008 tours of
Ireland!
I will be leading these tours with my trusty Irish partner Tom Pigott
from Limerick who has been in the tour business for many years and is
also a great singer. We travel in a comfortable 25 seater coach. We
stay 3 nights in one town, 2 in another, 3 in another, and our last
evening back near the Shannon airport. We stay in small hotels and an
occasional B & B.
By day we will visit the many points of interest in Ireland -
museums, ruins, abbeys, castles and so much more... And by night we
share music with local Irish singers and players. Some original
music, some traditional, and many songs by yours truly -- and any
others from our group who may wish to share a song or two.
There's lots of great music in the pubs in Doolin, Country Clare.
Trips to County Clare include the Cliffs of Moher, and the the
dramatic landscapes of The Burren. Also in County Galway is the
beautiful Connemara area and the village of Clifden. Some trips
include a a boat ride to Inishbofin island where time has stood
still. Gorgeous walking along one lane roads around the island.
Cost is $1750 per person based on double occupancy. We will do our
best to match up roommates if preferred. Single rooms are an
additional $200 total per person for all 9 nights. The fee also
includes all ground transportation, all lodging and full wonderful
Irish breakfasts each day. We also provide 3 evening group meals, and
the cost for our featured Irish musicians, poets, writers, etc.
You pay for your own flights to and from Shannon International
airport. (If we have 20 people willing to get to Philadelphia or
Boston or JFK, I will look into arranging a discounted flight as
well.) You'll also have to pay for all lunches, 6 dinners on your
own, and drinks tips, etc.
If you decide to join us, I'll need a 50% deposit by December 20th
(what a great Christmas/holiday present to each other!) and the
balance two months prior to departure.
Ireland does require a passport.
So let me know if you want to join us.

The big news of June was Monique and Dan's wedding. As soon as
pictures are available, I'll post the link. The eating, drinking and
dancing were outstanding. The ceremony was very touching. Monique
was gorgeous. Dan was handsome and eloquent. The bridesmaids were
lovely, the groomsmen charming. All the inlaws and outlaws got along
famously. We enjoyed the Pasadena scenery, weather and hospitality.
and my Aunt Claire O'Connor was fabulously surprised when my sister
Kathleen and I showed up in Aiken SC to celebrate her 88th birthday.

The Yes Men have struck again! In a brilliant performance on June 15,
Yes Men Andy Bichlbaum and Mike Bonanno posed as oil executives at the
GO-EXPO, Canada's largest oil industry trade show which was held at
Stampede Park in Calgary, Alberta.
This year's conference attracted more than more than 20,000 visitors
and exhibitors from around the world.

EXXON PROPOSES BURNING HUMANITY FOR FUEL IF CLIMATE CALAMITY HITS
Conference organizer fails to have Yes Men arrested
Imposters posing as ExxonMobil and National Petroleum Council (NPC)
representatives delivered an outrageous keynote speech to 300 oilmen
at GO-EXPO, Canada's largest oil conference, held at Stampede Park in
Calgary, Alberta, today.
The speech was billed beforehand by the GO-EXPO organizers as the
major highlight of this year's conference, which had 20,000
attendees. In it, the "NPC rep" was expected to deliver the
long-awaited conclusions of a study commissioned by US Energy
Secretary Samuel Bodman. The NPC is headed by former ExxonMobil CEO
Lee Raymond, who is also the chair of the study.
In the actual speech, the "NPC rep" announced that current U.S. and
Canadian energy policies (notably the massive, carbon-intensive
exploitation of Alberta's oil sands, and the development of liquid
coal) are increasing the chances of huge global calamities. But he
reassured the audience that in the worst case scenario, the oil
industry could "keep fuel flowing" by transforming the billions of
people who die into oil.
"We need something like whales, but infinitely more abundant," said
"NPC rep" "Shepard Wolff" (actually Andy Bichlbaum of the Yes Men),
before describing the technology used to render human flesh into a
new Exxon oil product called Vivoleum. 3-D animations of the process
brought it to life.
"Vivoleum works in perfect synergy with the continued expansion of
fossil fuel production," noted "Exxon rep" "Florian Osenberg" (Yes
Man Mike Bonanno). "With more fossil fuels comes a greater chance of
disaster, but that means more feedstock for Vivoleum. Fuel will
continue to flow for those of us left."
The oilmen listened to the lecture with attention, and then lit
"commemorative candles" supposedly made of Vivoleum obtained from the
flesh of an "Exxon janitor" who died as a result of cleaning up a
toxic spill. The audience only reacted when the janitor, in a video
tribute, announced that he wished to be transformed into candles
after his death, and all became crystal-clear.
At that point, Simon Mellor, Commercial & Business Development
Director for the company putting on the event, strode up and
physically forced the Yes Men from the stage. As Mellor escorted
Bonanno out the door, a dozen journalists surrounded Bichlbaum, who,
still in character as "Shepard Wolff," explained to them the
rationale for Vivoleum.
"We've got to get ready. After all, fossil fuel development like that
of my company is increasing the chances of catastrophic climate
change, which could lead to massive calamities, causing migration and
conflicts that would likely disable the pipelines and oil wells.
Without oil we could no longer produce or transport food, and most of
humanity would starve. That would be a tragedy, but at least all those
bodies could be turned into fuel for the rest of us."
"We're not talking about killing anyone," added the "NPC rep." "We're
talking about using them after nature has done the hard work. After
all, 150,000 people already die from climate-change related effects
every year. That's only going to go up - maybe way, way up. Will it
all go to waste? That would be cruel."
Security guards then dragged Bichlbaum away from the reporters, and
he and Bonanno were detained until Calgary Police Service officers
could arrive. The policemen, determining that no major infractions
had been committed, permitted the Yes Men to leave.
Canada's oil sands, along with "liquid coal," are keystones of Bush's
Energy Security plan. Mining the oil sands is one of the dirtiest
forms of oil production and has turned Canada into one of the world's
worst carbon emitters. The production of "liquid coal" has twice the
carbon footprint as that of ordinary gasoline. Such technologies
increase the likelihood of massive climate catastrophes that will
condemn to death untold millions of people, mainly poor.
"If our idea of energy security is to increase the chances of climate
calamity, we have a very funny sense of what security really is,"
Bonanno said. "While ExxonMobil continues to post record profits,
they use their money to persuade governments to do nothing about
climate change. This is a crime against humanity."
"Putting the former Exxon CEO in charge of the NPC, and soliciting
his advice on our energy future, is like putting the wolf in charge
of the flock," said "Shepard Wolff" (Bichlbaum). "Exxon has done more
damage to the environment and to our chances of survival than any
other company on earth. Why should we let them determine our

have two union summer schools ahead of me - always sources of

BERK SNOW REMEMBERED
I was utterly devastated to get the news that my dear friend Berk
Snow died suddenly and tragically on the 14th of June. Berk was the
host of Wild River Radio on KMUD-FM in Garberville, California. I
first met him on tour with Connie Cohen in January of 1993. We became
instant friends. Berk was a powerful spirit and a truly gentle man -
a vibrant voice and extraordinary and generous supporter of community
radio, the environment, and political songwriters and activists.
He also loved to fly. On June 14th he and his life partner,
companion and true love of more than 30 years - Suzanne Beers -
were on a short pleasure flight in Berk's single engine Cessna 172.
The plane crashed in a canyon in wildest Idaho, near the Oregon
border.
Even though he lived for several hours after the crash, our dear Berk
never regained consciousness. Miraculously, his beloved Suzanne
sustained only moderate compression fractures of her spine and some
relatively minor cuts. Suzanne then survived four days and three
nights in this rugged and isolated terrain until she was spotted by a
rescue team, and evacuated to safety.
Berk was a year younger than I - Additional details and photos are
posted at the KMUD website -- Berk touched the lives of so many people
- in his home community in Humboldt, at Folk Alliance, at the National
Association of Community Broadcasters, at the Kerrville Folk Festival,
at Burning Man, at the Oregon Country Fair, and throughout the world
of community radio and political activism.
Our community has sustained a terrible loss. My heart breaks for
Suzanne, and all those who loved Berk.

VICTORY IN BC
The Hospital Employees Union of British Columbia, Canada, won a huge
victory when the Canadian Supreme Court announced that Collective
Bargaining is a human right guaranteed by the Canadian Charter of
Rights and Freedoms. The 6-1 decision declares as unconstitutional
the infamous Bill 29, which stripped Canadian hospital workers of
their collective bargaining rights and provided for massive layoffs
and contracting out in health care.
I got a chance to perform at the Hospital Employees Union summer
school and had a fantastic time with this terrific group of
activists. I wrote a song for the convention called "We Fought Back."
I'll be posting the lyrics and, I hope, an mp3 to the blog soon.

IRELAND UPDATE
Most of you are very familiar with my love of Ireland, Irish music,
politics and poetry... Many of you wrote to say that you wished you
could have come along on my 2006 tour of Ireland. I'm very pleased to
report that you are all invited to come along on my 2008 tours of
Ireland!
I will be leading these tours with my trusty Irish partner Tom Pigott
from Limerick who has been in the tour business for many years and is
also a great singer. We travel in a comfortable 25 seater coach. We
stay 3 nights in one town, 2 in another, 3 in another, and our last
evening back near the Shannon airport. We stay in small hotels and an
occasional B & B.
By day we will visit the many points of interest in Ireland -
museums, ruins, abbeys, castles and so much more... And by night we
share music with local Irish singers and players. Some original
music, some traditional, and many songs by yours truly -- and any
others from our group who may wish to share a song or two.
There's lots of great music in the pubs in Doolin, Country Clare.
Trips to County Clare include the Cliffs of Moher, and the the
dramatic landscapes of The Burren. Also in County Galway is the
beautiful Connemara area and the village of Clifden. Some trips
include a a boat ride to Inishbofin island where time has stood
still. Gorgeous walking along one lane roads around the island.
Cost is $1750 per person based on double occupancy. We will do our
best to match up roommates if preferred. Single rooms are an
additional $200 total per person for all 9 nights. The fee also
includes all ground transportation, all lodging and full wonderful
Irish breakfasts each day. We also provide 3 evening group meals, and
the cost for our featured Irish musicians, poets, writers, etc.
You pay for your own flights to and from Shannon International
airport. (If we have 20 people willing to get to Philadelphia or
Boston or JFK, I will look into arranging a discounted flight as
well.) You'll also have to pay for all lunches, 6 dinners on your
own, and drinks tips, etc.
If you decide to join us, I'll need a 50% deposit by December 20th
(what a great Christmas/holiday present to each other!) and the
balance two months prior to departure.
Ireland does require a passport.

The big news of June was Monique and Dan's wedding. As soon as

dancing were outstanding. The ceremony was very touching. Monique
was gorgeous. Dan was handsome and eloquent. The bridesmaids were
lovely, the groomsmen charming. All the inlaws and outlaws got along
famously. We enjoyed the Pasadena scenery, weather and hospitality.

Kathleen and I showed up in Aiken SC to celebrate her 88th birthday.

This has been the rainiest Kerrville Folk Festival ever... we've had record low temperatures .. and some of the greatest music ever... I'm still floating (pun intended, too, I guess) from the fabulous sets turned in by my pals Steve James, Susan Werner, Small Potatoes ... so very much more too...
On Wednesday Chris Chandler does a concert at the beautifully renovated Threadgill Theater. I'll be doing a guest number, as will Adam & Kris, Oliver Steck and Stephanie Corby ... but the real star of the show will be David Morreale, Chris' wonderfullly talented new East Coast partner... this new show sizzles, and if you get a chance to catch Chris on the road ... do it!!

UNION SUMMER SCHOOLS
Just before coming to Kerrville I was minister-of-culture/faculty at the Regina Polk Institute for Union Women... it's a fantastic annual conference for union women from Wisconsin, Illinois, Iowa and thereabouts... This year's collective bargaining role play was negotiating a contract for migrant workers in North Carolina with the Growers' Association. Leticia Zavala from the Farm Labor Organizing Committee was our most informative advisor on this project and really opened our eyes to the serious problems of migrant workers in the US and the difficulty entailed in their struggle for dignity.
Just before the conference began we learned of the murder of Santiago Cruz, a 29 year old FLOC organizer. Santiago was staffing the FLOC office in Monterrey, Mexico. The FLOC office there is facilitating the process of obtaining H2A visas ... workers getting visas through the office need not deal with smugglers and coyotes ... spending $2-5000 to get across the border.
There were many unethical and corrupt people whose greedy livelihoods were challenged by FLOC's office. Santiago Cruz's murder was meant to deter the quest for justice in the fields.
I'm playing at three more of these wonderful union summerschools.. if you live on the west coast, I hope to see you in Olympia, Vancouver or Berkeley...
check the information in the tourdates section below... scholarships may still be available for those who qualify. don't pass up this great educational opportunity. These summer schools make you better union members, citizens and community members.

I've been invited by some very wonderful, experienced Irish-based tour guides to host a tour of Ireland!! I can take a small group (14-20 folks) to Ireland in 2008...
It looks like it would most likely be a nine day tour and cost approximately US $1750 + transportation to Shannon... This includes all ground transportation and accommodations and several meals, as well admission to as a series of terrific cultural events featuring Irish poets and musicians. If you'd like to know more about a tour like this... email me right away to express interest and I'll keep you informed as plans develop.

Attend the 26th Annual Summer Institute for Union Women for a week of learning, celebration, inspiration, and action. We welcome all women engaged in action to improve the conditions of working people. The Institute celebrates the solidarity of union and community-based women activists, and crosses the boundaries of age, race, occupation, and nation.
There will be classes and activities for women activists at every level of experience, from beginner to advanced. All classes will be presented in a supportive environment to enable the sharing of ideas, strategies, information, and experiences. Instructors are energetic and highly respected labor educators who understand the importance of providing a hands-on, dynamic educational experience. In addition to classes, there will be cultural events, solidarity actions, free time to sightsee, and exciting keynote speakers and plenary sessions.

THE REAL MAY DAY

May Day. A day to herald the coming of Spring with song and dance, a day for children with flowers in their hair to skip around beribboned maypoles, a time to crown May Day queens.
But once it also was a day for demonstrations that were crucial in winning the most important right ever won by working people -- the right demanded above all others
by the labor activists of a century ago:
"Eight hours for work, eight hours for rest, eight
hours for what we will!"
The changing economy has forced many workers in recent years to regularly exceed the eight-hour workday that their predecessors won. But eight hours for work nevertheless remains the standard in the United States and every other industrial nation and at least an aspiration in others.
Winning the eight-hour workday took years of hard struggle, beginning in the mid-1800s. By 1867, the federal government, six states and several cities had passed laws limiting their employees' hours to eight per day. The laws were not effectively enforced and in some cases were overturned by courts, but they set an important precedent that finally led to a powerful popular movement.
The movement was launched in 1886 by the Federation of Organized Trades and Labor Unions, then one of the country's major labor organizations. The federation called for workers to negotiate with their employers for an eight-hour workday and, if that failed, to strike on May 1 in support of the demand.
Some negotiated, some marched and otherwise demonstrated. More than 300,000 struck. And all won strong support, in dozens of cities -- Chicago, New York, Baltimore, Boston, Milwaukee, St. Louis, San Francisco, Pittsburgh, Denver , Indianapolis, Cincinnati, Detroit, Washington, Newark, Brooklyn, St. Paul and others.
More than 30,000 workers had won the eight-hour day by April. On May Day, another 350,000 workers walked off their jobs at nearly 12,000 establishments, more than 185,000 of them eventually winning their demand. Most of the others won at least some reduction in working hours that had ranged up to 16 a day.
Additionally, many employers cut Saturday operations to a half-day, and the practice of working on Sundays, also relatively common, was all but abandoned by major
industries.
"Hurray for Shorter Time," declared a headline in the New York Sun over a story describing a torchlight procession of 25,000 workers that highlighted the eight-hour-day activities in New York. Never before had the city experienced so large a demonstration.
Not all newspapers were as supportive, however. The strikes and demonstrations, one paper complained, amounted to "communism, lurid and rampant." The eight-hour day, another said, would encourage "loafing and gambling, rioting, debauchery, and drunkenness."
The greatest opposition came in response to the demonstrations led by anarchist and socialist groups in Chicago, the heart of the eight-hour day movement. Four demonstrators were killed and more than 200 wounded by police who waded into their ranks, but what the demonstrators opponents seized on were the events two days later at a protest rally in Haymarket Square. A bomb was thrown into the ranks of the police who had surrounded the square, killing seven and wounding 59.
The bomb thrower was never discovered, but eight labor, socialist and anarchist leaders branded as violent, dangerous radicals by press and police alike -- were arrested on the clearly trumped up charge that they had conspired to commit murder. Four of them were hanged, one committed suicide while in jail, and three were pardoned six years later by Illinois Gov. John Peter Altgeld.
Employers responded to the so-called Haymarket Riot by mounting a counter-offensive that seriously eroded the eight-hour day movement's gains. But the movement was an extremely effective organizing tool for the country's unions, and in 1890 President Samuel Gompers of the American Federation of Labor was able to call for "an International Labor Day" in favor of the eight-hour workday. Similar proclamations were made by socialist and union leaders in other nations where, to this day, May Day is celebrated as Labor Day.
Workers in the United States and 13 other countries demonstrated on that May Day of 1890 -- including 30,000 of them in Chicago. The New York World hailed it as "Labor's Emancipation Day." It was. For it marked the start of an irreversible drive that finally established the eight-hour day as the standard for millions of working people.

Circuit City Cuts 3,400 'Overpaid' Workers

Circuit City fired 3,400 employees in stores across the country yesterday, saying they were making too much money and would be replaced by new hires willing to work for less.
The company said the dismissals had nothing to do with performance but were part of a larger effort to improve the bottom line. The firings represent about 9 percent of the company's in-store workforce of 40,000.
"Retail is very competitive and store operations just have to contain their costs," said Jim Babb, a Circuit City spokesman. "We deeply regret the negative impact that was had on these folks. It was no fault of theirs."
The company gave the dismissed workers severance pay and told them that after 10 weeks they were free to apply for any openings. Employees reached by a reporter said they were notified yesterday morning and told to leave immediately.
The firings, along with several other moves, are expected to reduce expenses for the electronics retailer by $110 million in fiscal year 2008 and $140 million a year starting in fiscal 2009. Circuit City said sales would be volatile for the next several months as the company adjusts to the changes.
"It's definitely going to have some cost-savings, but I think the bigger impact could be seen in weaker, poor service," said Timothy Allen, an analyst with Jefferies & Co. "I have a feeling the people they're letting go have probably been there longer, have more experience, more product knowledge."
Steven Rash, 24, said he was one of 11 workers fired at a Circuit City in Asheville, N.C. The store manager broke the news during a meeting at 8:15 a.m. and escorted them out of the store. Rash said he has worked for the retailer for seven years and was one of the most junior members of the affected group.
He said he earned $11.59 an hour and worked from 15 to 20 hours a week. He received four weeks of severance pay. Though he has a full-time job at Bank of America, he said he needs to find part-time work to help pay his student loans.
"It's not just a part-time job," he said. "It's about paying the bills."
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average hourly wage for retail salespeople was $11.14 in May 2005, the latest data available.
Circuit City chief executive Philip J. Schoonover received a salary of $716,346, along with a $704,700 bonus last year. He also has long-term compensation of $3 million in stock awards and $340,000 in underlying options, according to company filings.

But the most touching moment of the day was when Deneen Sigler of the striking Conn-Selmer workers took the stage.
230 union musician instrument makers at the Conn-Selmer Vincent Bach plant in Elkhart, Indiana have been on strike since April of 2006. This is the longest ongoing strike in the United States. The company which owns this plant, Steinway Musical Inc was taken over by Dana Messina and other speculators who got their "training" under stock manipulator Michael Milken. They have sought to destroy the health care and pension rights of the workers and drive out those workers who were over 50 years of age. In an effort to break the strike, 120 scabs have been brought into the plant and management has obtained injunctions severely limiting picketing by striking workers.

"Born of Fire" - The NewLanders
"Born of Fire" is 11 Songs of Steel and Industry collected by Paula Purnell and innovatively arranged by the NewLanders for this project of the Westmoreland Museum of American Art.
I should have known that any musical project undertaken by regional treasure Paula Purnell and multi-instrumentalist and engineer extraordinaire Doug Wilkin would be of exceptional quality. In addition to Doug and Paula the NewLanders feature Art Gazdik on mandolin and violins and vocals and Gerard Rohlf on 6 and 12 string guitars. The project is enhanced considerably by the budget provided by several area foundations, enabling the NewLanders to engage the services of a wide variety of talented musicians from around Pittsburgh.
In live performance the songs are accompanied by a powerpoint show of paintings from steel and industry assembled by The Westmoreland. This brilliant recording paints pictures of its own. The recording contains some familiar material - Woody Guthrie's "Hard Travelin'" and a delightful arrangement of "Bread and Roses" using Mimi Farina's melody. Deborah Silverstein's classic song about strip mining - "Draglines" - is given respectful treatment. Gerard Rohlf's original about riverboat captain Spike Crain sits nicely in the project.
The most noteworthy contribution made by "Born of Fire" is the breathtaking arrangement and performance of many largely unknown songs written at the dawn of Pittsburgh's industrial era. "Twenty-Inch Mill" (c. 1870), "Where the Old Allegheny and Mongahela Flow" (c. 1910), "The Altoona Freight Wreck" (1926), "I Lie in the American Land" (c. 1899), "Two Cent Coal" (c. 1877) and "In Soho on a Saturday Night" (c. 1855) are beautifully revived in this recording. The NewLanders vocal harmonies are flawless.
The show-stealer in my opinion is "Coal Diggin Blues," collected by George Korson in 1940, but sung by African-American coal miners as early as 1840. A must for any union member's record collection - and a much more authentic expression of true Pittsburgh than overpriced sweatshop-made sports items. Moving Day - April 21 and April 22!!!
I'm looking for someone with an open pickup to come by over the weekend and let us load the couch, china closet, dining room table, etc onto it to go over to the new house. Much of the work is already done. Since I'm renting my old house I'm leaving a lot of the heavy stuff (washer, dryer, frig, stove etc)... but it's still a pain in the butt to move!! If you know someone with an open pickup, tell 'em they wouldn't even have to lift anything... just provide the truck on april 21 or 22 ... and they get a permanent spot on my party list, undying gratitude, 60 days off their time in purgatory, gas money, free beer & food... that's about all the incentives I can provide ... call me at 412.877.6480 ...
