THE NEW CD IS READY!!!!

I couldn't be more excited! This is my best recording ever.

"Dump the Bosses Off Your Back" should be available from http://cdbaby.com/all/unionmaid and http://laborheritage.org in the next couple days. You can hear some of the songs at http://myspace.com/annefeeneyreally

It's a fantastic collection of songs... 6 previously unrecorded songs of mine, 6 great songs from colleagues Kiya Heartwood, James Keelaghan, Al Grierson, John William Davis, Evan Greer and Colum Sands, and three unforgettable versions of IWW classics. I'm joined by the finest musicians in Pittsburgh, as well as Anne Weiss, the Austin Lounge Lizards, Commander Cody and Emma's Revolution. Oooh la la!!
Please order your copy right away to help me dig out from the mountain of debt I incurred with this great project.

If you send me the name and station address of your favorite folk radio show, I'll send them a CD with your compliments, and let you know that it's there, so that you can request your favorite songs.

At this point, I think I have sent the CD to all the sponsors of the recording... If you sent me $100 and didn't get a CD yet, please accept my apologies and drop me a line to let me know. I'll get one in the mail to you immediately! And I mailed out the last of the pre-orders today... so if you don't have your CD very soon, call me or write me!

One of the many highlights of the fabulous FL tour I just completed was getting to do a couple shows with the best political satirist in North America - the brilliant ROY ZIMMERMAN. ( http://royzimmerman.com )

BURIED: THE STORY OF THE SAGO MINE DISASTER
April 3, 4, 5 and 6
Waller Hall Studio Theater - IUP - Indiana, PA

I'm thrilled to be part of another production of Jerry Starr's brilliant play about the Sago mine disaster. My talented companera Sue Powers will be with me for this production at Indiana University of Pennsylvania -- just outside of Pittsburgh.

http://www.hhs.iup.edu/laborcenter/CurrentEvents/Buried.shtml

In this moving drama, we get to watch the transformation of the miners' wives from widows to warriors as they investigate the causes of the Sago mine disaster. There are about a dozen songs featured in the show -- I wrote two of them for this play.

FLORIDA 2008 !!!

This was the best FL tour ever!
Ken and Cee Cee, my fabulous Jacksonville hosts, now have a great radio show - Progressive Roots - Sunday nights on WZNZ radio, streaming live at http://www.1460.us from 8-10PM. Check out their myspace, and for all your performers on my list - send them your CDs!!

My visit to the Miccosukee Land Coop was the best ever! Kayaking on Wicissa with Peter Broderson was fabulous - even saw a big ol' gator. The show was lots of fun too... and the next night we saw Roy Zimmerman in Tally, with a great opening set by Floridian Grant Peeples... Roy invited me up for a couple numbers, too! This picture is of Doug Gauss, me and Roy Zimmerman - I'm loving Doug's shirt!

Then on to St Augustine where we ended up raising $1000 for the Winter Soldier Campaign at a concert I did at the UU Fellowship of St Augustine. It was such a fun show! And I stayed with American legend Stetson Kennedy and his wonderful wife Sandra Parks... I just wish our visit could have lasted longer. Here's a photo by JD Pleasant taken at the St Augustine gig.

It was so wonderful to get to Orange City and reconnect with the oh-so-talented Magda Hiller and her most charming daughter Wyatt (partner Chip is no slouch either!).

Then on to JAX for two busy days on campus at UNF, thanks to Andy Johnson, United Faculty, UNF and the efforts of my friend and comrade, Stan Swart. This time I met some really wonderful, engaged, concerned, bright students at UNF. It was so great to see Candice Carter again, and the Amnesty Chapter concert at the Gallery was the best show ever at UNF... Thanks to Shelley Clay-Robinson and her family, and to Roy Zimmerman for a great guest set.

Stan hosts "The Brother Stan Labor Show!"
Saturdays, 10 AM - 12 Noon
AM 1460 -- and streaming live at http://www.1460.us
Call-In # = 854-1460

LISTEN IN! -- CALL IN!

Before I left Jacksonville, I got to spend most of a day with Jackie Brown's dear friend Ysryl -- he and I paid a call on Dorothy Pitman Hughes ... a feminist icon and wonderful writer who recently opened a bookstore in JAX. Dorothy managed Jackie Brown's remarkable campaign for mayor of Jacksonville (many of you will remember me raving about how amazing Jackie was in these newsletters. My friend Jackie died last year of breast cancer at the age of 46). Ysryl, on the other hand, is a living miracle, having survived catastrophic injuries to his brain when the tailgate from a dump truck almost took his head off last fall.

From Jacksonville I headed to Tampa and had a great visit with Gloria Holloway and her family, and my dear friend Diane Stein. Gainesville with Jenny and Joe Courter was terrific, and the show raised a few hundred dollars to help send them to Venezuela... I'll be looking forward to their eyewitness report. Sarasota was great... catching up with Martha Shunn, the extremely dedicated and effective president of the Florida Postal Workers' Union ... and singing union songs for two hours inside Whole Foods was awesome! I wish I could get some YouTube videos of that show!

WSLR community radio, 96.5 in Sarasota is a great addition to the audio landscape there... the latest project of the amazing Dave Beaton and Arlene Sweeting of Fogartyville... It was great to see the whole Fogartyville gang turn out for the show at JRs Packinghouse... Steve Stokes, Jim Glover, The Merrills and the Johnsons (Ireland bound with me, this summer!), Aunt Marilyn, Faith Fippinger, CC Carter... so many more -- thanks! You made it into a very special night for me!

From Sarasota I headed to Florida Gulf Coast University for a reunion with my old Edgewood neighbor, Vicki Dimidjian, and a chance to meet some terrific activists on this very reactionary campus... Angela and Rob - you're my heros! Then on to my Ft Myers haven with Wendyl and Bill and the gang from Manna Reading Room. And what a fun-filled St Pat's afternoon it was with the United Irish of SW Florida!!! Many thanks to Laura Griffin for lining that up!

The tour ended with two great concerts for the Immokalee Workers in Lake Worth and Dania Beach. Here's a photo that Leonard Bryant took at the concert in Lake Worth -- (The Friends Meeting House that hosted the concert was recently featured on NBC news as a spot where the FBI was infiltrating the anti-war movement!)

Vicki Ryder and Ray Del Papa did a fantastic job of organizing these concerts, which raised close to $2000 for the Immokalee workers' campaign for justice... check out http://ciw-online.org to learn more about their amazing work. And David Engels wrote a lovely review of the Dania Beach concert and posted it on my guestbook, http://www.annefeeney.com/guestbook.html ... a nice highlight to the Dania Beach show was Jerry Gray's banjo and singing -- part of the legendary Canadian folk group, The Travellers, Jerry regaled me with stories about introducing young Gordon Lightfoot to audiences at the Mariposa Folk Festival.

I got to spend those last two days in Florida with Brooke Bell and Amy Carol Webb ... their warmth and hospitality is overwhelming... and Amy http://amycarolwebb.com played my new guitar and sang me two fabulous songs from her upcoming Florida songs CD.

I took Amtrak there and back ... I'll be very happy when we have a democrat in the White House and some much needed funding is sent in Amtrak's direction. I'm hoping to be riding the train a lot in 2008... I'll keep you posted on that adventure. Anyway, there's the Sunshine State in a nutshell.... Thanks to everyone who made it so special!

DUMP THE BOSSES OFF YOUR BACK

It's finished!!! ... I dropped off the master at the duplicator this afternoon. I am SOOOOOOOOO excited. This is unquestionably my best CD ever. You're going to love it. It will be ready in about two weeks and I'll have it for sale on CDBaby very soon after that. I spent today writing thank you notes and addressing mailers to all the $100 sponsors of the CD -- They'll be the first to get these 15 tunes:

1. Dump the Bosses off your Back 2:02
2. Preacher and the Slave 3:24
3. You Will Answer 2:54
4. Hillcrest Mine 3:11
5. Goonies 2:40
6. We Fought Back 2:44
7. Santiago Cruz 2:54
8. Ya Basta 3:12
9. Sago 3:43
10. 50¢ Sneakers and Five Dollar Wine 3:04
11. Hallelujah, I'm a Bum 4:03
12. How Much for the Life of a Miner? 2:43
13. How Long? 4:29
14. Brave New Christmas 4:01
15. Whatever You Say, Say Nothing 2:15

It's too late to get your name in the liner notes of the CD, but if you'd like to help me with the crushing $14,000 debt I'm carrying from this project, I'd sure appreciate it.

Your check to :

Anne Feeney * 2240 Milligan Ave * Pittsburgh, PA 15218

will be most welcome and deeply appreciated. You can send me a donation via paypal too... there's a "Donation" button just underneath my picture on the right hand side of this page.

And many many thanks to the folks who stepped up to help me with this. Doing a recording is a real leap of faith on a budget like mine, but when you get to hear it, you'll think it was worth it, I'm sure. Commander Cody came in to play piano and sing on "Preacher and the Slave." The Austin Lounge Lizards harmonized my a capella gospel tune "You Will Answer," and Pat and Sandy (Emma's Revolution) harmonize on "Hillcrest Mine." And when you hear the lush magnificent harmonies that Anne Weiss arranged for "How Long?" you'll be dazzled!

I'm doing a CD release concert in Detroit on the Sunday of Labor Notes - April 13th...

I'd love to do a CD release concert in your hometown too - so let me know if you have any ideas. Also.. if you have a great folk show on the radio, let me know about it. I'm happy to send CDs to your favorite folk show... and I'll tell them you sent me!

If you write reviews of folk music for any publication, let me know and I'll send you a review copy!

End of an era... Martin D-28 #232732 retires

I'm still somewhat traumatized by the news that my sweet Martin D-28 is no longer well enough to travel. I have had to retire my beloved guitar. It's just too fragile to continue subjecting it to the rigors of touring. It's the only guitar I've ever owned or played. I bought it new for $400 in 1969 -- It's the only "thing" I've ever been really attached to...

I had to buy a new guitar. I'll be taking my new Larrivee with me to Cleveland and Florida. It's a beautiful guitar, and I'm sure I'll learn to love it. (Guitar prices seem to have kept pace with CEO compensation in the last 40 years, but my friends at Swissvale Music have made me a generous deal.) Still, incurring such a major expense in the middle of doing a CD was DEFINITELY NOT in my plans.

I'm looking forward to this new era, though. Be sure to come up and check her out at my upcoming gigs!

*********************************

Florida is action-packed, as you'll see below! If you know anyone who lives in Florida, please forward this newsletter to them. Gloria Holloway is worried about turnout for the house concert she's doing for me in Tampa. If you know someone in Tampa, please send the info on to them...

It will be great to do some work with the Coalition of Immokalee Workers while I'm there, too... http://ciw-online.org

BURIED

A new production of BURIED: The Story of the Sago Mine Disaster opens at Indiana University of Pennsylvania (just about 40 minutes from downtown Pittsburgh) on April 3 and runs through April 6th.

Jerry Starr's powerful play about the transformation of the Sago women from widows to warriors is riveting, and it's my pleasure and honor to provide the music throughout this production, along with my talented friend Sue Powers on banjo.

For more information go to:
http://www.hhs.iup.edu/laborcenter/CurrentEvents/Buried.shtml

*********************************

My research on my Grandfather's life and work is on hiatus until I return from Florida... but there is so much source material out there, I feel like I'm really getting to know him, even though he died more than 12 years before I was born. I'm so grateful to the IUP Labor Center for giving me this opportunity to dig into this most personally interesting chapter of PA labor history.

************************************

We ended up with 16 dinner guests for our Oscars party. You can read my reviews of 2007's films at:

http://fellow-travelers-advisory.blogspot.com/2008/02/2008-movie-picks.html

Our menu was:

THERE WILL BE BLOODy Marys

Saganaki - A flaming Greek cheese dish, which exploded at table, courtesy of Bridget Shields - It was served with sliced baguettes as our tribute to MICHAEL CLAYTON

a JUNO salad of baby bella mushrooms, baby arugula, baby spinach, baby swiss cheese, raspberries and jerusalem artichokes courtesy of Dan and Monique

Our entree was a stretch, but really... when this dish was invented for the King of Sweden in 1897 the average life expectancy was 45 years -- It was NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN ... We served a variation of the Swedish classic, Veal Oscar, substituting free range hormone/anti-biotic free pork filets for the veal ..

and our dessert of ATONEMENT was Burnt Almond Torte, provided by Mary Magan.

mmmmmmmmm mmmmmmmmmmm mmmmmmm

*******************************************

Julius Margolin (http://georgeandjulius.com) is doing much better. Thanks to all of you who sent cards. He'd still enjoy hearing from you, I'm sure, if you haven't gotten around to sending him a card yet..

Julius Margolin
330 W 28th, Apt 3-G
New York, NY 10001

I'm looking forward to performing with him at Botto House on Mayday.

********************************************

Utah Phillips is still not at home ... He has decided not to have a heart transplant. You can listen to him explain why in a podcast posted at

http://utahphillips.org/podcast/index.html

I'm going to be arranging a benefit concert for him here in Pittsburgh, and performing at one in Madison, WI in May.

SPECIAL IRELAND MAILING
OSCARS/WRITERS' STRIKE

1 February
Pittsburgh

Hi Folks!

I can't remember the last time that I was home for a whole month! It's been a great month... lots of time to cook and eat well, to work out at the gym, to update my mailing list (welcome to all of you new folks!) and to work on the very exciting project I've undertaken thanks to a grant from the Labor Center at Indiana University of Pennsylvania.

*********************************************

THE GRANT!!!

My grandfather, William Patrick Feeney (1876-1939), was a union organizer for the United Mineworkers of America. He started work in the infamous New Hartley Colliery near Bedlington, England in 1888 (that's right, he was twelve) - and emigrated to the US in 1890. He went straight into the mines here, married, fathered ten children, served a term in the PA legislature, introduced one of Pennsylvania's first mine safety bills, played the violin and sang (and wrote) union songs, knew Gene Debs, Fannie Sellins and Mother Jones -- and thanks to the digitized archives of the local papers from that era, I have found thousands of articles chronicling his most interesting life. I'll be writing some papers ... if not a book... if not a musical... who knows?

*********************************************

THE STUDIO!!

I'm FINALLY finishing DUMP THE BOSSES OFF YOUR BACK - my new CD. With any luck, the CD will feature a lot of my talented friends, including Evan Greer, Anne Weiss, the Austin Lounge Lizards, Commander Cody and many many more! I could really really really use a few more sponsors. If you're in a position to help, send $100 to

Anne Feeney
2240 Milligan Ave
Pittsburgh, PA 15218

I'll be happy to put your name (or your sweetheart's name -- there's an unusual Valentine's gift!) in the liner notes.

This fifteen song CD should be finished by the time I leave for Florida.

Here's what's going to be on it:

Preacher and the Slave (Joe Hill) 4:11
You Will Answer (Feeney) 2:48
How Long? (Feeney) 4:51
Dump the Bosses off Your Back (John Brill) 2:09
How Much for the Life of Miner? (Feeney) 2:21
Santiago Cruz (Feeney) 2:03
Ya Basta! (Evan Greer) 3:13
Hallelujah I'm a Bum (McClintock/Kotheimer) 4:12
Sago (Kiya Heartwood) 4:20
Hillcrest Mine (James Keelaghan) 3:16
50 Cent Sneakers and $5 Wine (Al Grierson) 3:13
Goonies (Feeney) 3:18
Whatever You Say, Say Nothing (Colum Sands) 2:16
Brave New Christmas (John William Davis) 4:07
We Fought Back (Feeney) 2:18

It costs about $2500 to master and press 1000 CDs. It costs about $5000 in studio time for the sound engineer. It costs about $10,000 to pay the musicians who work on the recording. It costs another $1000 to pay the pension for the musicians working on the recording. It will cost about $600 to pay the composers of the 'cover songs' for the rights to record their songs. It costs several hundred dollars to get the printing for the artwork. Layout, design and typeset can run into hundreds of dollars. Add in lots of transportation, copying, snacks for the musicians in the studio. And then mailing dozens of free copies for review to radio and press .... These are daunting numbers to come up with on a folksinger's budget...

You can put a donation on your credit card by clicking on the Donate button in the right hand column of this page underneath my picture. If that doesn't work for you for some reason, and you'd still like to contribute on a credit card, email me anne@annefeeney.com and I can invoice you. Your generosity and support makes my work and music possible.

FAMILY NEWS

My cousin Kelly Grefenstette of South Carolina is married to pro golfer Charles Warren -- We're very excited to see that Charles is leading the pack at a big tournament- the FBR Open in Phoenix! Go Charles!!

http://www.sportsnetwork.com/default.asp?c=sportsnetwork&page=golf-m/news/ben4126948.htm

My cousins Kevin McCahill and Mary Lane McCahill of Columbia, MD just went sailing in the British Virgin Islands. There's a link to some photos below, and here's a wonderful excerpt from Mary's trip diary:

"The highlight of the trip for Kevin and me was the amazing snorkelling in the choral reefs of the BVI, and we snorkelled our hearts out, literally for hours. We saw so many beautiful undersea creatures it's beyond description, including an immense and ancient Hawksbill sea turtle with whom I had the blessed fortune to swim briefly. He (the turtle) actually looked at me and was close enough to touch, but I respected his home and let him swim off in peace. We also saw many of the wonderful living jewels of the reef including the blue chromies, four-eyed butterflyfish, blue tangs, parrotfish, trunkfish, yellowtails, bluehead wrasse, fairy basslets, and some big ugly guys like barracuda, tarpon and grouper. The reef itself has its own beauty with many varieties and colors of coral such as staghorn and brain corals and gently swaying green and purple sea fans. Snorkelling for us is like meditation: the world around us becomes very quiet and still as the sea life continues to move about or sway gently in the current somewhat oblivious to our presence. It is so peaceful and warm and comforting that the sound of the water becomes a chant and draws us into it's utter quiet. "

Thanks Mary!

If management won't come up with a real settlement, I won't be holding my Oscars party. There wouldn't be any joy in watching a writer-less Oscars show.

Still, the eternal optimist, I'm catching as many films as possible hoping for the best. I've posted my 2008 film reviews on the blog.

2008 MOVIE PICKS

What a BLEAK year for film. Maybe it's just because Hollywood did so well last year that this year's batch seems lackluster... anyway, here are my capsule reviews for your reading pleasure...

MICHAEL CLAYTON - I skipped this one in the first round because I thought it would be another improbable legal story. NOT SO! It's a first rate thriller with Tom Wilkinson doing a breathtaking portrayal of a full-blown unmedicated bipolar person and George Clooney turning in a first rate performance as well. I really enjoyed this one. That it villifies an ADM/Monsanto type corporation enhanced my enjoyment considerably.

THERE WILL BE BLOOD - I can't tell you how excited I was to see that Daniel Day Lewis was starring in an Upton Sinclair story about the oil industry. One would think that with a title like "There Will be Blood" that we'd have the makings of a first rate allegory for our times about oil/greed/death. Instead we have a fairly compelling but resolutely bleak study of a psychopathic brute... and not much else. I would have enjoyed this more if there had been the slightest hint of background on how Daniel Day Lewis came to be so soulless.

NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN - I'm a huge Coen brothers fan, and this film doesn't disappoint. It's certainly not uplifiting, but it is compelling. Javier Bardem is absolutely amazing - the scariest bad guy since Hannibal Lecter.. woof! and Tommy Lee Jones is brilliant. This is the most suspenseful film the Coens have pulled off, and it's riveting. They should win the Directing Oscar. The ending is going to leave a lot of you groaning... but it just makes me want to see it again.

ATONEMENT really missed the boat. I think this could have been a really good movie... and I suspect it came from a very good book. It's impossible to believe that a much-less-than-tender, very brief and almost certainly unconsummated tryst in the family library forms the basis for years of yearning and selfless devotion - especially from Keira Knightley -- It's impossible to believe she wouldn't have moved on with her young life if that was truly their only encounter. I suspect that in the book she and Robbie Turner (the housekeeper's son played by James McEvoy) were secret lovers at school, but the class barriers that separate them became painfully obvious when they returned to her family's estate. For my money, the underrated KITE RUNNER was a better and more engaging version of the same story - Youngster does things in his/her youth that are wrong/shameful, spends rest of life worrying about it, becomes novelist.

JUNO - What is JUNO doing in this list? If I had caught it as a Tuesday night special on Lifetime I might have thought it a pretty good made-for-TV movie. The film's version of visit to an abortion clinic was nothing short of preposterous ... I love a witty script if the people uttering the lines are old enough to have conceivably thought up the words they are delivering. It did have a good soundtrack, though.

INTO THE WILD was a much better film than either ATONEMENT or JUNO. So was THE SAVAGES. So was GONE BABY GONE. I thought ENCHANTED was a better musical than Tim Burton's hugely disappointing SWEENEY TODD. (And believe me, I LOVE Tim Burton AND Johnny Depp.) I'm on my way to see AWAY FROM HER right now. Julie Christie looks like a shoo-in to me, sight unseen. Best supporting actor is filled with fantastic choices. Philip Seymour Hoffman was brilliant in CHARLIE WILSON'S WAR - Cate Blanchett was fabulous in I'M NOT THERE -- but I'm rooting for the always amazing Ruby Dee, even though I haven't found the almost 4 hours required to see AMERICAN GANGSTER. I haven't seen the DIVING BELL/3:10 TO YUMA/LA VIE EN ROSE/THE ASSSASSINATION OF JESSE JAMES/IN THE VALLEY OF ELAH/EASTERN PROMISES/LARS AND THE REAL GIRL. I can't make a call on best actor... but if Tommy Lee Jones is better in IN THE VALLEY OF ELAH than he was in NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN, my money is on him.

I'm stunned that the brilliant screenplay for CHARLIE WILSON'S WAR didn't get an Oscar nomination - maybe it was because the film was such a distorted pack of lies that it made the snappy script hard to swallow. I haven't seen enough of the nominees in either of the writing categories to make a call...

This would have been a better year to have Michael Moore going for BEST PICTURE instead of BEST DOCUMENTARY. I loved SICKO, and it deserves a huge audience...(besides, he used the Austin Lounge Lizards version of Irving Berlin's C-U-B-A.) But the Oscar for best documentary almost certainly has to go to one of the fabulous anti-war documentaries - My money's on NO END IN SIGHT.

Amazingly, I haven't seen even one of the nominees for best foreign film. But I did enjoy both KINGS and EL VIOLIN - despite the fact that both films were very depressing and, well, BLEAK. For best picture of 2008, I'll be rooting for Michael Clayton, just because the good guys win, and in this year of extremely brutal, bleak films, I found that refreshing. See you at the movies!

Anne Feeney's Fellow Travelers' Advisory - JANUARY 2008, VOLUME THREE, #10

Anne Feeney's Fellow Travelers' Advisory - JANUARY 2008, VOLUME THREE,
#10

I'm sitting in my new office, which is a lovely room, but so full of
piles of things to be sorted that it's a daunting place to be. My
bedroom isn't much better. Instead of tackling the mess, I'm reading
an online book on how to avoid procrastination...

This is the time of year when many of us are taking stock of
ourselves... are we still "on the path"? have we taken a detour?
2008 is taking me on some new journeys. I hope that this new year is
kinder to us all than 2007 was.

2007 IN THE REARVIEW

2007 was a fantastic year for me -- full of challenges and obstacles,
but for the most part, all well-met with lots of help from my friends.
For the first time in my life, I was alone at Christmas this year.
My husband went back to Sweden, my son to his wife's family in
California, and my daughter and her boyfriend went to Mexico. I
curled up with Barbara Kingsolver's fabulous "Animal, Vegetable,
Miracle," and Barack Obama's "Dreams from my Father ". This very
unusual vantage point left me as a spectator on the season, with
plenty of time to think. As most Americans are wallowing in stuff
right now, I'm looking for ways to simplify my life. If you haven't
visited http://storyofstuff.com this would be a great time to do
it. I'm planning a more sustainable 2008.

THE NURSES' STRIKE IS OVER!

My holidays were brightened considerably by the news that the valiant
UAN nurses on strike against Appalachian Regional Health Systems
ratified a good contract that will have them all back to work no
later than March 31, 2008. Keeping the scabs on the payroll isn't my
favorite way of achieving safer staffing levels... I'll look forward
to new from the nurses on how that works out.

WILL THIS CD EVER GET FINISHED??????

These next two months at home would be a great time to finish "Dump
the Bosses Off Your Back" -- my new CD... Many many thanks to the
dozen folks who sent me sponsorship money last month when I asked for
it... Unfortunately, that's not enough to get the project finished,
but it will get me back in the studio for a couple more days. If
you'd like to see your name in the liner notes of my new CD, or if
you'd just like to help me get this album finished and out there,
please send $100 to Anne Feeney, 2240 Milligan Ave, Pittsburgh, PA
15218.

I GET A GRANT!!

2008 is taking me on several new, but still familiar paths... Thanks
to a grant from the Labor Center at Indiana University of
Pennsylvania, I will spend the first couple months of 2008
researching and writing on the life William Patrick Feeney --
immigrant, coal miner, fearless union organizer for the United
Mineworkers of America, one-term legislator in Pennsylvania,
accomplished violinist, labor singer -- and my grandfather.

This means that I *won't* be at the Western Workers' Heritage
Festival -- or anywhere on the left coast -- in January and February,
as I have been for the past 7 years or more.

FLORIDA IN MARCH??

I'm still hoping to do my Florida tour in early March ... anyone
interested? With the closing of two of my favorite venues -
Fogartyville and the Main St Café -- it's harder to plan a Florida
tour.... Florida -- let me hear from you!!

NEW PRODUCTIONS OF "BURIED"
In early April, I'll be performing in a production of Jerry Starr's
powerful play, "Buried: The Story of the Sago Mine Disaster." I may
be doing another two or three productions of the play as the year
unfolds. There is a great deal of interest in the play these days.

COMING IN 2008

I'm looking forward to the familiarity and welcome of the Regina Polk
Conference for Labor Union Women, Susquehanna Music and Arts Fest,
Labor Notes, Mayday at Botto House, Radio Live!, the Debs Dinner
... as well as the excitement of some new opportunities -- Cleveland,
St. Catherine's, Ontario, and the Association for Humanist Sociology
conference.

COME TO IRELAND WITH ME!

I hope by now you know that I'm taking three groups of friends on
fabulous music/history/politics and poetry tours of western Ireland
... There are still seats available for you on all three tours,
although August is almost full. I'm very grateful to the folks who
have signed up early for these tours... it's making it possible for
Tom Pigott and me to plan fantastic trips. It's still not too late
to sign up, and the earlier that you do, the easier it is to make
great plans. Email me for more information: anne@annefeeney.com

SCANDINAVIA IN JULY/AUGUST
I haven't decided if I'm going to spend the time in between the tours
in Europe or on the left coast. Invitations to a few festivals on one
side of the pond or the other would clinch my decision pretty quickly.

THE ELECTION

Now more than ever I think it's essential to focus on issues, not
candidates. If we keep the heat on for an immediate end to the war
and for national health care now, we might get both. If we invest
all our energy in trying to decide which candidate has the best of
the lousy plans to phase down the war and tack some hopeless bandaid
on the health care crisis, that's what we'll get....

That's it. No immediate destinations.

Drop me a line and tell me what you're up to.

Happy New Year!

Love and peace

Anne

750 NURSES ON STRIKE FOR SAFE STAFFING LEVELS!

On October 1, 2007 750 nurses went on strike against Appalachian Regional Health Systems. The incessant mandatory overtime and chronic understaffing is endangering patients and limiting the nurses' ability to do their jobs properly.

When I played in Charleston, WV in early November, I stopped by the nurses' picket line in Beckley. They're a great group of folks, and determined to stick this out.

Read more here:

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20071116/ap_on_re_us/nurses_strike_6

You can help by signing this petition:

http://www.unionvoice.org/campaign/nurses_kywv

Or clogging up their scab hotline -- apply for a job... hell apply for several jobs ... if they're getting 10,000 job applications a day it might make it hard for them to find the three creepy lowlife scabs willing to come to WV or KY to break this strike.

http://www.arh.org/Employment/ImmediateOpenings.php

I applied for a job as an RN at Beckley ... My name was Ms. Scab E. Scab. I obtained my BS in BackStabbing. I was referred to their site by Benedict Arnold. My references included Satan Himself, beelzebub@hotmail.com, telephone (666) 666-6666

You can amuse yourself filling out the application, and help the striking nurses by making it just a little harder for management to sort through the job applications looking for real scabs.

AND, you can contribute securely online at:

or by check to:

BENEFIT CONCERT FOR STRIKING NURSES

I will almost certainly be doing a benefit concert for the striking nurses at a Pittsburgh location on Saturday, December 15th. It will be a free concert with your generous donations to the strike fund ... food, cash, checks, clothing, toys ... all delivered to the nurses on the 16th in time for Christmas.

Check http://annefeeney.com/calendar.html for the location.

In the meantime, gather up your generous gifts for the striking nurses. If I don't get a location for the concert, I'll come to your house to pick up your gifts and even sing you a song!

"BURIED" PRODUCTIONS FOR 2008

Jerry Starr's powerful play, BURIED: The Story of the Sago Mine Disaster, will be produced in Detroit, Chicago and Indiana, PA in 2008. I'm hoping to be a part of all three productions, although my 2008 schedule may make that difficult. I'll *definitely* be doing the music for the Indiana, PA production at the end of March/beginning of April 2008.

The Musicians' Collective

2007 was a year of tragic and devastating losses - starting with the murder of brilliant 36 year old Helen Hill in New Orleans last January 4th; Santiago Cruz, FLOC organizer, only 29 years old when he was found murdered in the union office in Monterrey; my friend Jackie Brown, dead at 47 from breast cancer in Jacksonville; my dear friend Berk Snow, dead in a plane crash at 55; my son's childhood best friend, Joel Daniels Walker - dead at 27 here in Pittsburgh; the dynamic young president of United American Nurses, Cheryl Johnson - dead of a brain aneurism at 57 -- The world is diminished by the loss of Molly Ivins, George Becker, Jackie Alper, Pat Jardine and Victor Rabinowitz. And my hometown won't be the same without Ralph Kelly and Leon Swimmer. The tragic, preventable deaths at the Crandall Canyon mines in Utah remind us all to "Mourn the Dead and Fight Like Hell for the Living!"

2007 was also filled with joys. Lots of wonderful new babies to play with, lots of weddings - most notably (for me) the wedding of my son Dan to the brilliant and lovely Monique Murad. This Thanksgiving holiday was the best ever - family, friends, music, games, jokes, food and lots of laughs and hugs. My wonderful daughter Amy is almost a certified massage therapist.

I was blessed with too many wonderful performance opportunities to list (... but the Salt Spring Folk Club will give me lovely memories for a lifetime!).

Still, I am so touched by the kindness, generosity, dedication and hard work of my wonderful presenters and tour mates: Rick Smith, all the NOLSW folks, Celeste Howard and Georgia Pinkel, Inger and Bo in Gothenburg, Charles King, Kathleen Culver and Noel Beasley of the Eugene Debs Foundation, Don Scheiber, my Telus pals in Smedjebacken, Sarah & Tarmo, Shelley Kessler & all the WWLHF folks, Kay and Walter Tillow, Eleanor Walden, Pat Hogan, Michael Goodman & Sharon Sjerven (!), Ken Orchard & Sharon Hazelwood, Al & Dotty Dale & Betsy Pernotto & Bob Marshall, Leon Peek, Lu Mitchell, Danny Yeager, Jenny Brown & Joe Courter, Ward Broderson, Julia Ayres, Alexis, Arlene & Dave, Wendyl, Martha Shunn, Melanie Crawford, Alan Patrusevich, Dale Morris, Jamie and Matt in IA City, Corey Dolgon, Art & Melanie, Dave Johnson, Ron Haldeman, Helena Worthen, Margie Rosenkranz, Terry Irons, Robert Ford, Teresa Allen, Adam & Kris, Brian QTN, my OCF Faire Family, Ken & Janet Bates, Jim Gorman & Joey Hartman, Larry Olds, all my wonderful new friends in Florence, OR, Amy Newell, Maureen and Al Cholger, Maureen Wood, Jim Cook & the NW Labor Arts committee (!), Cecile and Axel Myer, Dan Kenney, Chris in Charleston, Jim & Jenny Barrett, the Anathoth Community folks, Janet Tucker, Julienne and John Oldfield, Liz Long, Polly Grubb, Alex, Paul Kotheimer, Rosanne Barker, Julius Margolin, David Rovics, Evan Greer and Chris Chandler. (I'm sure I missed some folks I'm going to kick myself over, but it's a start!)

SEASONAL JOKE (From Karen Newman)

IRISH TOURS UPDATE

The Irish tours are filling up fast. I've got room for six more folks in June, five more in August, and still sixteen more folks for the Sept/Oct tour (when the airfares should be lower). I've set up Google discussion groups for folks on the tour, and we're busy planning our adventures, making reading lists and more. It's not too late to join us. We'll need $750 by December 20th to hold your spot, and the balance eight weeks before departure.

After some preliminary investigation, it doesn't appear likely that I'll be able to arrange any "group discount" with the airlines. So you should start looking into air fares to Ireland. I hope the dollar gets stronger soon... although it's sure making this tour even more of a bargain now!!! Nine days in Ireland with all accommodations, all ground transportation, all breakfasts, three dinners, and admission to most group events only $1750. (This does NOT include airfare to Shannon, Ireland where each tour begins).

We'll have the best of the West - the best scenery, the best music, and many opportunities to learn about Irish history, politics, poetry and more! Send me an email if you'd like more information.

A HALLOWE'EN STORY
The Revolt of the Skeleton Crew

After months of dwindling staff due to attrition and layoffs, Heartland Human Services in Effingham, IL was finally down to a real skeleton crew.

Thirty five workers were doing the work of 70 by the time they finally said, "Enough is enough," and went on strike.

These thirty five AFSCME members (Local 3494) have been on strike since July 2nd - almost four months without a paycheck ... The board at Heart(less) (In)human Services is ignoring the recommendations of its own chief negotiator and its attorney ... cruelly prolonging the strike. These workers deliver mental health services to inpatients and outpatients in Illinois.

Evan Greer and I helped to raise $800 for the strikers while we were in the midwest. The 100 delegates at the AFSCME education conference I played at last weekend donated $125 to the strike fund. Can't you help by sending a donation - how about $35??? - to:

AFSCME COUNCIL 31 SOLIDARITY FUND
615 S. Second St.
P.O. Box 2328
Springfield, IL 62705

heartland@heartlandhs.org is the email address of the employer...
The Board Members are:

Roger Marshall President
Jeff Bloemker Vice President
Pat Green Secretary/Treasurer
Deborah Mahon Director
Debra Owen Director
John Perry Director
George Westjohn Director
Terri Phillips Director

Email them all at heartland@heartlandhs.org and tell them "Enough is Enough!" Time to return to the bargaining table with promises of adequate staffing, livable wages and security and dignity on the job!

Thanks!

Julius Margolin Tribute Concert

The Julius Margolin Tribute show was a smashing success... The lovely auditorium at 1199 - the Health and Hospital Workers' Union of New York was a perfect setting for an inspiring show. Julius was in great form and sang a couple songs with George Mann. He was very touched by the turnout and the music. We raised about $1800 for a scholarship fund to help young trade union activists attend the Great Labor Arts Exchange and the Western Workers' Labor Heritage Festival.

Northwest 2008

I'm trying to decide whether or not to tour the Northwest in Jan/Feb of 2008. My new CD should be ready by then, and there's a good chance that my summer tour to the Northwest will be very very short this year. Does anyone know of anything going on in the NW (or the great Canadian SW) in Jan/Feb 2008?

San Diego Cousins Dodge the Wildfires

My cousins Jim & Mardy McCahill and Peggy and John Duncan (parents of Connor & triplets Emma, Colin and Tara) live in the "voluntary" evacuation area of the San Diego wildfires. You can imagine the bedlam which ensued when Peggy and John had to uproot the two year old triplets and big brother Connor to new surroundings. At last report, alll are safely back at home.

Hole in One for Birdman

On Wednesday, October 17, my Maryland cousins Kevin (Birdman) McCahill his brother Denny (Yo Daddy) were playing an afternoon round at The Timbers at Troy golf course, in Elkridge, MD. This is an outstanding course, and a very difficult challenge, as witnessed by the Slope Index of 134 from the blue tees, which they were playing that day. The fifth hole is a par three requiring the tee shot to carry over an expanse of open natural wetlands, which extend right up to the heavily trapped green. The course considers this to be their signature hole, and has a picture of it on the front of the scorecard.

It is an exceptionally beautiful and demanding par three.

Denny hit first, and produced a pretty good shot, that hit on the left side of the green, and then bounced into one of the many sand-traps surrounding the hole. Kevin then stepped up, and with a classically smooth swing, launched a high flying seven iron that, after a sweet and delicate draw, landed three feet in front of the pin, took one bounce, and rolled smoothly into the center of the cup! Yeaaaaaay! Hooray for Kevin! A lifetime goal achieved, in the most elegant fashion. Kevin turned after watching the shot go in, and with an incredulous look on his face, rushed across the tee to embrace his cheering brother in exultation.

As if by magic, the beer cart girl showed up as they reached the green, and Kevin immediately bought his first (of many, I expect) round of drinks in celebration of his exploit. The young lady was astounded to receive a five dollar tip just for handing out three beers, but she soon discovered why, and ended up helping with the celebration.

Thanks to Yo Daddy for the exciting account, which I adapted for this month's Family News.
