ACT NOW for justice in Zimbabwe!!

Lovemore Matombo and Wellington Chibebe, the President and General Secretary of the Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) were arrested on 8 May for speaking out about the state-sponsored violence in Zimbabwe - or as Robert Mugabe's government put it "spreading falsehoods prejudicial to the State".

Lovemore and Wellington are due to appear in court on 30 July, to defend themselves against these charges. Over 2,000 trade unionists from around the world have come together to make a public demonstration of support for the ZCTU leaders and all unionists in Zimbabwe.

Please take a moment to add your voice to this growing tide of support for these brave trade unionists. Everyone can do something to help --

Racism by any other name...

To the New Yorker:

I am a satirist (musical) myself. I am married to a visual artist who does satirical political cartoons here in Sweden. As artists, we are constantly defending freedom of expression. HOWEVER, if this picture had appeared on the front page of any mainstream or conservative publication, it would have been correctly identified as what it is: Right wing racist propaganda featuring slanderous stereotypes.

Instead, you have sullied the pages of the illustrious New Yorker with this disgusting image, leaving the media to hail this as "satire."

Satire reveals truth. This image obfuscates the truth -- in an era when truth becomes increasingly harder to find.

It doesn't matter what sort of articles appear inside the magazine. You are perpetuating villainous public falsehoods designed to manipulate the fear and ignorance that abounds in this country. That ignorance abounds in large part due to a COMPLICIT media that does NOTHING to shed light on the real issues.

Next month's cover should be an apology and a clarion call for a more vigilant media.

REPORT FROM THE FIRST IRELAND TOUR

There were 21 of us on this first tour of Ireland - a real international group we were, too! Irish, American, Swedish, Canadian & Danish - and now all friends for life! We went to Kerry, Clare and Galway.

(This group photo taken by Tom Pigott on Guy Zahller's camera...)

We visited Padraic Pearse's summer house, a dozen fabulous pubs to hear traditional music and ballads, the Cliffs of Moher, Lady Gregory's house at Coole Park, and took in some of the most amazing scenery Ireland has to offer... AND ... we made some great music of our own!

I sure didn't have to do all the singing on this trip! Our tour was enlivened by the musical presence of Nell and Laurie Postans and Molly Newman of Victoria, BC as well as the singing of our fearless tour leader, Tom Pigott, birthday girl Marie Berlev of Copenhagen, Denmark and Nettie (also celebrating her birthday on this trip!) Sabin and Linda Turney of Chicago - and really, when we all sang together - (frequently) - it sounded great.

My husband, Julie Leonardsson, took great photos and made many wonderful sketches during the tour... You can see them at:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/annefeeney/sets/72157605809447284/

And our Danish friends have posted their photos at:

http://rejser.berlev.dk/#2.0

We had plenty to celebrate on this tour. On June 11th, we were overjoyed to learn that the Raytheon 9 were acquitted.

"The six anti-war activists who occupied arms manufacturer Raytheon's offices in Derry and destroyed its computers have been acquitted by a jury in Belfast.

Derry Anti War Coalition calls on the office of the Attorney General and the Crown Prosecution Service, in light of the jury's verdict of 'not guilty' to criminal damage charges, to institute an investigation into the activities of Raytheon at its various plants across the UK, with a view to determining whether Raytheon is a criminal enterprise."

Read the full article, as well as the powerful statement of the Raytheon 9, that begins...

"We said from the beginning that we came to this court not as the accused but as the accusers of Raytheon."

http://www.indymedia.ie/article/87945

... There was NOTHING about it in the Irish Times - Ireland's major daily.

Then, on the 13th of June, Ireland overwhelmingly rejected a militarised corporatized federal Europe and defeated the "Lisbon Accord." In Clifden my friend Niall Farrell, who had been working tirelessly for the treaty's defeat, filled everyone in on all the details and explained why the defeat of the treaty was a victory for working people everywhere.

In that case, the vote was widely covered in the media as a huge "embarrassment" for Ireland, and a "failure." Perhaps, the pundits opined, the people were too stupid to understand how important it was to vote YES... perhaps there should be another vote to see if they could get it right.

It's obvious that media consolidation is burying the truth everywhere, not just in the United States.

Anyway, the tour was exhilarating and uplifting! I wish you could have all been there!

FISA FILIBUSTER

As I'm going to press with this issue it looks like there may still be some hope to stop this latest hateful version of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act - retroactively legalizing the Bush administration's warrantless wiretapping program.

Call your Senators today and ask them to support the Feingo-Dodd filibuster and oppose any version of FISA that grants retroactive immunity for warrantless wiretapping.

PRICE HIKE COMING ON LAST TOUR OF IRELAND IN 2008

The September tour of Clare, Kerry and Cork is filling up.
Your $1750 tour cost includes all ground transportation, all hotels, all breakfasts, three dinners, and many extras. If you reserve now, or if you've already reserved a seat on this tour, you are still guaranteed the original rate of $1750. This is a fantastic bargain, as anyone who has travelled recently in Ireland can tell you.

http://www.annefeeney.com/Pages/enchantedwaytours.html

is the link on my webpage to describe the tours..

http://www.enchantedwaytours.ie/?page_id=13

particularly describes the Clare, Kerry and Cork tour.

Unless the dollar makes a huge comeback between now and the end of July, my Irish partner, Tom Pigott, has asked me to raise the price on this tour of Ireland, which begins on September 30, 2008 and ends on October 9, 2008. We'll decide closer to the end of the month how much we need to raise the tour cost to compensate for the dollar's shrinking value abroad ... but if you've been seriously thinking about this tour, now would be an excellent time to commit. The price will go up on August 1st.

DONEGAL WOMAN - A BOOK

I just finished reading "Donegal Woman," by activist Séan Throne. It's a vivid depiction of rural life in Donegal at the turn of the 20th century, to which Throne has a very personal connection. Born in Lifford, Co. Donegal, Throne was involved in the civil rights movement in Derry and an eyewitness to Bloody Sunday in 1968. Throne now lives in Chicago. Donegal Woman is a combination of family history, historical fiction, manifesto and documentary -- I found the book very compelling. If you'd like to order a copy, the book is $23. You can order it directly from the author - loughfinn@aol.com - and have it signed by the author.

UTAH PHILLIPS (1925 - 2008)

How lucky we are that Bruce "Utah" Phillips was so very generous with his time, his music, his humor and his wisdom. He has left all of us with so much. Seventy three years does not seem very long to me any more. I will feel forever grateful to him for the time he shared with me. My heart breaks for his wonderful wife, Joanna Robinson, and all his family and friends. It somehow seems appropriate that Utah's gigantic heart was his weakness... He had a tremendous love for us all. This is the link to the obituary in the New York Times

Don't Pay the Ransom -- I've Escaped!

Thanks so much to everyone who has expressed concern for me during this health scare.. Your kindness means more to me than I can express... here's the latest...

I got home from the Susquehanna Music and Arts Festival at 8 last night. I listened to my "Stress Free Surgery" cassette and began fasting at midnight.

I went in for the surgery this morning... was fitted with the IV and taken to the sonography suite and given a topical anesthetic while they inserted a wire into my bosom to mark the path to the metal marker they implanted when they did the biopsy.

Next it was on to the mammography suite to get films to make sure that the wire was actually AT the metal marker.

That proved to be difficult to the point of impossible ... the 'spot' was very hard to find because it got sooooooooooooooo small after the biopsy.

From there we went back to the surgery suite... The anesthesiologist came in, discussed all the medication I would be receiving and I signed all the consent forms.

My surgeon came in prior to the trip the O.R. and after some discussion my doc said she wasn't 100% committed to the idea of doing the surgery today.

Soooooooooooo, we're going to watch this lump for a few months and see what happens...

A REPRIEVE!!!

TA DA!!

I'm delighted...

So far the keyword for this adventure isn't "scary" or "painful"... it's EXPENSIVE...

The Egg and I

Well, the doc says the lump has to come out. I've got an MRI scheduled
(if my f%#!ing insurance company okays it) for April 29th. She should be
able to determine after the MRI if the lump is in breast tissue (in which
case she says it's a "partial mastectomy") or in muscle tissue (in which case i
forget what she said it was... as soon as she said the word "mastectomy"
my heart started racing and i forgot i was an adult).

Once the bugger is extracted (it's VERY small now... 1 cm at most) they'll
be able to figure out what it is, and we'll come up with post op
treatments.

She says it's a miracle that this lump engorged with blood so that it
could be detected, and that the core biopsy caught the atypical cells ...
she thought it much more likely that the biopsy would have just picked up
blood from the tumor. She makes it sound like this will be pretty simple
and the recovery very quick.

The Lump-outa-me (so far, I just can't use that "m" word) is scheduled for
12 May. She says I'll be fine to drive to Madison the next day to perform
at the Utah Phillips benefit.

So.. that's the news... sounds like I'm a lucky girl

Thanks for your concern.

Love

Anne

The Easter Bunny brings me a Breast Egg

I was horrified to discover a LARGE lump on my left breast on Easter morning. It measured 3+ cm (more than an inch) in diameter when I went for the mammogram and biopsy three days later.

The biopsy turned up some atypical cells, and surgical removal is probably indicated. Miraculously, the lump has gotten MUCH smaller since then... less than 1 cm. I see a breast surgeon at 3PM on the 24th and I'm holding my breath until then... but it seems unlikely that this is anything serious, since it is getting smaller...

This adventure has left me with almost $2000 in medical bills that my insurance doesn't cover (I switched to one of those high-deductible plans a few months ago, but this came up before I set aside a medical savings account with the deductible in it...)

I've been in touch with so many of my wonderful women friends who have come out healthy and happy on the other side of this journey ... No matter what the news is on Thursday I am optimistic...

But before the June Fellow Travelers' Advisory comes out, I want all you women out there who have been procrastinating on a mammogram to go DO IT!

I'll post something on my blog as soon as I know what's up...

MAYDAY

I am so looking forward to the annual Mayday celebration at the American Labor Museum at Botto House in Haledon, NJ. This will be Julius Margolin's return to show-biz after his hospitalization.. What a joy it will be to see him and work with him again.

The amazing Chris Chandler will be there too - and he and I have been collaborating on a new piece of his over the telephone that we'll be debuting at Botto House.

I hope that your community is figuring out a way to honor International Workers' Day. The ILWU plans to shut down the ports of the West Coast to protest the war on May 1, 2008. Madison always has a great Mayday celebration, and it looks like Minneapolis/St Paul is planning a gala celebration this year... Still it looks as though most of the Mayday festivals are again being held outside the US this year. It's ironic, since Mayday honors the sacrifice of Chicago's Haymarket Martyrs in the battle for an eight hour day.

Wherever you are on May 1st, I hope you'll raise a glass with a friend and sing (to the tune of Daisy, Daisy):

Mayday, Mayday
That's the real workers' day
Labor's history says
Don't give your day away
It's time that the working class sez
"Stick Labor Day up your (orifice of choice)"
Now ain't it great
To celebrate on the glorious First of May!

Labor Notes Fracas

This year's Labor Notes conference was livened up by the presence of a boisterous bunch of misguided SEIU members who attempted to crash and disrupt the annual Labor Notes banquet. They had been told this was a "union busters' banquet." A couple hundred members of Andy Stern's purple ocean washed into the lobby of the Hyatt Dearborn, and tried to push their way into the ballroom, where 900 union activists were gathered for Labor Notes' annual fundraising dinner.

The controversy centered over Labor Notes decision to invite Rose Ann De Moro to speak to the conference attendees. (As it happened, Rose Ann wasn't even there.) Rose Ann is one of the most articulate advocates for national health care in the nation, and her union, the California Nurses' Association, has achieved extraordinary victories - like mandated staff-to-patient ratios in California.

More recently, Rose Ann's union, the National Nurses' Organizing Committee, interfered in a scheduled union election in Ohio, between SEIU and Catholic Healthcare Partners. Good arguments can be made for both SEIU and NNOC's positions - but SEIU didn't come to debate. They would have been welcome to participate in the many lively workshops at the conference that weekend. Instead they opted to appear in the middle of the dinner, pushing, shoving, shouting and disrupting. One longtime Detroit activist and former Labor Notes staffer, Dianne Feeley, (a UAW retiree) sustained a head wound that required several stitches.

My pal Ron Kaminkow went out to engage the rowdy SEIU members in dialog. While most of the SEIU members shouted him down and refused to engage in conversation, a couple did speak to Ron. He said they seemed genuinely surprised to learn that the banquet was being served by union members to union activists - locomotive engineers, electricians, plumbers, pipefitters, teachers, writers, teamsters, auto workers - even other members of SEIU - all there to honor a 911 rescue worker suffering severe respiratory ailments, several African-American women on strike since February against 50 per cent pay cuts at a nearby UAW-represented American Axle Plant; some Black and Latino day laborers from Baltimore who led a "living wage" campaign to aid their fellow stadium cleaners at Camden Yards; and three New York City cabbies from the Taxi Workers Alliance that led last Fall's strike by 10,000 yellow cab drivers.

The Hyatt called the Dearborn police as the banquet staff retreated to the kitchen until the food could be served safely. When the police arrived, the SEIU contingent departed, shouting "We'll be back." I hope they register for the conference next time.

The August tour to Ireland is full. I still have two spots for the June 10-19 tour of Kerry, Clare and Galway, and 11 for September's tour of Cork, Kerry and Clare. If you're interested, check out http://www.annefeeney.com/Pages/enchantedwaytours.html and email me with any questions you have.
