Hi there hellraisers -

I can hardly believe I'm going back on the road again!  I fervently hope that my health has been restored and that I'll be able to get back with my life and my work.  I've booked a tour that will test that theory pretty well.  If you have friends in California or Oregon, or near Reno, NV -  I sure hope you'll encourage them to come out and catch the show.  If you are *anywhere* along our tour route and could arrange to get some of our really snazzy tour posters hung up in your town, drop me a line as soon as you read this and give me your address as well as how many lovely 11"x17" union-printed posters you can get hung up.  Kate Downing designed them, and Steel Valley Printers printed them and they are beauties!

I have to thank my friend Mark Ross http://www.lehnherr.com/butte/  for putting me up to this.  I wasn't even sure I was going to apply to my beloved Oregon Country Fair this year until Mark called me and suggested that we put a Woody Guthrie tribute show together.  Mark is a very gifted traditional musician and was Utah Phillips' side musician and occasionally, co-writer.  He knows more about Woody Guthrie than anyone I know, and putting this tour together has been a blast.  Our secret weapon on this tour is Adam Moss, a brilliant young fiddler currently based in New York City.

We've had so much fun planning the tour, and I'm so excited about it I just ordered tour tees!  I have photos in next month's newsletter, but they're very cool in sizes from 24 mos to 2X

I'm going to have a limited supply of those awesome "Internationale" music boxes and other cool stuff .... expecting a summer sale of all the merchandise left over from the tour.

I hope all of you who live along the tour route will be sure to catch our shows and tell your friends.  And, I'll be happy to send you posters.

Hoping to see you soon!

Anne

JULIUS MARGOLIN "YOUTH IN LABOR" SCHOLARSHIP BENEFIT CONCERT

Hunger strikers charge Congress is starving postal service
America’s postal service is being starved financially by Congress, according to protesters who will be staging hunger strikes and other actions on the Capitol grounds in Washington, D.C., and nationwide, including at congressional offices throughout Washington state, beginning June 25th .
The hunger strikes occur after announced cuts of 25-75% in hours for many small offices, and just days before the July 1 slowdown of some first-class mail. They will highlight the connection between loss of service to postal customers, and congressional delay in fixing overpayments into federal benefit funds.
The activists claim that a 2006 Congressional mandate, which forces the US Postal Service to prefund 75 years' worth of retiree health benefits in a ten-year window, accounts for the bulk of losses that are sending the service into a death spiral.
Not only would the postal service have been profitable from 2007-2010 without the mandate, say the strikers, the USPS has also overpaid tens of billions into two pension funds.
“Not the internet, not private competition, not the recession – Congress is responsible for the postal mess” said Jamie Partridge, a retired letter carrier traveling from Portland, Oregon for the hunger strike in D.C..  “Corporate interests, working through their friends in Congress, want to undermine the USPS, bust the unions, then give the work to private, for-profit interests.”
Postmaster General Patrick Donahoe announced in May that he would begin closure of half the mail sorting plants in the country and cut hours in half the nation’s post offices, mostly in rural areas.
On July 1, next-day delivery of first-class mail will be reduced to mailings within local distribution areas (there are five in western Washington). As of February 1, 2013, next-day first class mail will be completely eliminated for the mailing public, unless Congress releases sufficient postal funds.
The hunger strikers are calling on Donahoe to suspend cuts and closures, and calling on Congress to immediately fix the finances by repealing the prefunding mandate and refunding the pension surplus.
Local hunger strikers from Olympia, Tacoma, and Seattle will do public protests in Olympia and Vancouver on June 25, and other actions during the week, ending at the Federal Building in Seattle 5pm-6pm on June 28. The actions are sponsored by Communities and Postal Workers United (www.cpwunited.com), and endorsed by community groups, individuals, and union locals nationwide.

WISCONSIN HEARTBREAKER

I can't say I'm not disappointed by sleazy Scott Walker hanging on to his office by a $20 million dollar thread.  At least it's expensive to screw the working class.  The good news is, my buddy Dave Newby is doing really well after some nasty back surgery and the Repugs lost the Senate.

HELP JILL STEIN GET ON THE BALLOT IN PA!

My wonderful pal Cheri Honkala(from the Kensington Welfare Rights Union) phoned me yesterday to ask me if I could circulate petitions for Jill Stein (Green Party candidate for President) on the ballot in PA. I'm going off on my tour, but if you can help, email honkala4stein@gmail.com  - Most of you know how to do this, but if not, they'll be happy to show you how.  You need 40,000 signatures to get on the ballot and they only have 26,000 - this is do-able!  email Cheri today.

WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE AN ANNE FEENEY SONGBOOK?

Occasionally people ask me if I have a song book.  I've thought about doing one.  I'd like to put in stories about the songs.  I don't want it to be just my songs, either.  There are quite a few songs of others folks that have become "signature" songs for me over the years, and I'd like to include them too.  I'd like some photos and graphics in it, too.  So, the first question is, what song would you like to see in the songbook? WOuld you be willing to sponsor a song?  (I think $100 per song would cover all the initial costs ... transcriptions, permissions, printing).   If you'd like to sponsor a song, let me know which one, and send $100 via Paypal to anne@annefeeney.com, or by check to 2240 Milligan Ave, Pittsburgh,  PA  15218

AMY IS ENGAGED
My daughter Amy got engaged to Mike Meadows and the happy couple plans to wed on December 15th in Kyle, TX - just outside of Austin.  I couldn't be happier.  Mike is a great guy, and he already feels like part of the family.

I had a spectacular time with my darling Sebastian, Daniel and Monique.

She was born a slave near Waco, Texas and married Albert R.Parsons who had become a radical white Republican after serving first as a Confederate solider. They moved to Chicago in 1873 and became labor organizers. In a labor rally for the 8 hour day a bomb exploded and her husband along with nine men were framed up and charged with being responsible for the bomb. This became known as the Haymarket Square bombing and is now commemorated all over the world as May Day.

Hi y'all

(I'm heading for Texas in a couple hours so I'm gettin' my howdy on)

On May 12th my son and his family arrive in Austin from Harare, Zimbabwe to spend a week at my daughter's house.  They may have thought they'd get a little quality time with Amy and Mike away from the grandparents .... but they should have known better.  I fly down today (the 11th) and Grandpa Ron arrives on the 13th.
Cruising on the Zabezi

After a week together in TX Monique will take the family to Pasadena to hang out with her folks until June 1st, when they all come to Pittsburgh to spend two weeks with me.  YAY!!  And in the middle of their stay Monique goes to DC for training and Dan's going to TN for a wedding and I get to watch Sebastian for 48 hours.  Hooray!  I'm very excited about that.

International Sing Out for Earth Day!

My friend Hali Hammer thought it would be great if everyone in the world would sing Woody Guthrie's iconic "This Land is Your Land" at the same time on Earth Day - April 22nd.  Thousands of folks responded.  At Noon Pacific Daylight Time groups gathered in Dallas, Pittsburgh, San Francisco, New York, Vermont, Atlanta, Costa Rica, Florence, OR, Detroit, Ft Lauderdale, FL, Lancaster, PA, Sarasota, FL, Minneapolis and many other cities.
http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL08806269F3A0AB22&feature=mh_lolz
The big edited version of all the performances is happening in CA right now.  I'll be sure to post a link when it's finished.

Here is Pittsburgh's version - and if you think your eyes are deceiving you, that really is Bill Oliver, Austin's "Mr. Habitat."  He was in town visiting family and joined us, then came back to my house after the video and did a wonderful concert with special guests Roger Day and Brad Yoder :

Then I was off to Harrisburg, our state Capitol, to protest Gov. Corbett's latest intrusions into women's lives and health.  My favorite sign was:

"Thou shalt not mess with women's reproductive rights"
                                                             - Fallopians 4:13

Pat Humphries and Sandy O, "Emma's Revolution" and many others performed (including me!)

MAYDAY!! MAYDAY!!

Pittsburgh hosted a Mayday song sing-along at Letter Carriers Local 84.  Bob Glidden co-ordinated the wonderful evening of song.  We started off with Smokey Dymny's Mayday classic

Mayday, Mayday (to the tune of Daisy, Daisy)

Mayday Mayday, that's the real Workers' Day
Labor's history says
Don't give your day away

We won't go out with the Bosses
Stuff Labor Day up your #!#sses
And we'll look sweet
When we take the street
In the glorious month of May

Of course we sang "The Internationale," and many many others.

The Struggle Continues at American Crystal Sugar

Please send some $$ to these workers, locked out of their jobs since August 1st.  The enormously profitable American Crystal Sugar, aided by giant agribusiness, is trying to destroy the lives of 1200 loyal members of the Bakery, Confectioners, Tobacco and Grain Millers' Union (BCTGM) with their refusal to bargain and other union-busting tactics.  Let them know that they are not alone.  Send what you can to:

BCTGM Relief Fund

Thank you so much for any help you can give to these workers!

LABOR NOTES 2012

Over 1500 hellraisers gathered in Chicago May 4-6th to strategize, organize, share tips and information, tell stories about how to beat the boss - an altogether uplifting weekend.  I saw several remarkable documentaries -all of which I highly recommend -

"Brothers on the Line" about the Reuther brothers http://brothersontheline.tumblr.com/
"Abused" about the Postville, IA raids on the kosher meat-packing plant http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1737082/
"Anne Braden, Southern Patriot" http://media.gfem.org/node/10765
"Locked Out" - Rio Tinto and Boron,CA http://www.lockedout2010.org/
and my favorite...
"HEIST! Who Stole the American Dream?"  (which you can order directly from me for $20 +$2 shipping) - a fabulous film by Don Goldmacher and Frances Causey with music by me (The Corporate Welfare song) and Evan Greer (Never Surrender!)

Send your check to:

A very touching moment of the weekend was when Jerry Tucker's daughter Tracy accepted the "Troublemakers' Award" on behalf of her most wonderful father.

Jerry is ill, and when Elise Bryant led the banquet crowd in a song of healing for Jerry, there wasn't a dry eye in the house...

On the Road Again!

I've decided to do a tour in July to see how well I hold up.  I feel terrific right now, and I'm so looking forward to getting on the road and singing again.  I'll be working my way from Santa Cruz, CA to Portland, OR and back, and I still have a few dates open that I'd like to fill.  I'm calling it the "Hard-Travelin' Tour" in honor of Woody Guthrie.  I'm celebrating his hundredth birthday this year by touring with Mark Ross and Adam Moss with a show of songs Woody wrote, or could have written.... Mark is an amazing multi-instrumentalist... banjo and guitar and many more.  When he was a kid he read Woody Guthrie's "BOUND FOR GLORY" and thought it was an instruction manual.  He's been on the road for over 40 years now.  Also joining us starting July 6th is Adam Moss, fiddler extraordinaire.  A founding member of the fabulous Green Mountain Grass, Adam (also known as 'Pickles') is in constant demand for his prodigious skills on violin and dynamic stage presence.
I hope you'll check the open dates to see if you can help with a show, and clear you calendar and tell your friends - Anne Feeney's back on the road with a honkin' wonderful show!!

HOUSE CONCERT WITH "MR. HABITAT' - BILL OLIVER - ON EARTH DAY!!

VERY VERY wonderful news for all of us. Bill Oliver, "Mr. Habitat," is going to be in Pittsburgh on Earth Day! I couldn't be more excited. http://www.mrhabitat.net/index.php

... so I've decided to host a house concert immediately after our Point Park event. Time permitting, we might even get an early preview of our video... watch the "dailies." I'll have some snacks and drinks, and at 5:30 PM we'll start the house concert at my house. It will be a super kid-friendly show and I expect it to be over around 7 or 7:30, in time for most kids' school-night bedtimes. Something in the $20-25 per family range would be great. All proceeds go to Bill. We're so lucky to have him. Unfortunately, the reason he's here is  because of family illness, or we never would have been able to snag one of the foremost environmental singers in the country for Earth Day.

Bill Oliver - "Mr. Habitat"

Bill Oliver of Austin TX in concert at my house at 5:30PM on April 22nd!  Don't miss it!!!

Spread the word, folks!

Please RSVP by phone or text to (412) 877-6480 if you want to come, and with how many people. I'll give you my address then. I can only accommodate about 40 for this concert, so call early to save a seat.

Hi there!
Here's an Earth Day project we can all be part of.  I hope you'll come to the SING OUT we're organizing in Pittsburgh... or better yet, connect with or organize an event of your own wherever you are

AT EARTH DAY EVENTS ACROSS THE COUNTRY

THE MISSION:  To sing “This Land Is Your Land” TOGETHER in the key of D (for consistency) across the nation and at the same time. Videotaped performances from around the country will be used to create a montage of the events.  iPhones, Vimeo cams, flip phones - anything goes!

Country Joe MacDonald will participate in the Berkeley, CA sing-along.

In Pittsburgh folks will meet in Point Park and sing in front of the fountain (weather permitting) at 3PM sharp - Otherwise, we'll sing under the overpass in Point Park.  Participants are invited to bring kids, musical instruments, terrible towels, costumes (tree, dolphin – use your imagination!), signs, earth flags  … Arrive at the park between 2:15 and 2:30. We’ll warm up/rehearse for about a half hour, and then we’ll start at 3 PM SHARP

Hi!
Since I've been sidelined by illness I've been looking for some creative organizing I could do mostly from home. I love my friend Hali Hammer's idea to have a round the world singalong on Earth Day!  It must be more subversive an idea than I thought, too.  The Parks and Recreation Department just declined to allow us to participate in their event because our singalong of This Land is Your Land sounds too political to them!

I guess I shouldn't be surprised.  The Wisconsin Senate is pushing for felony charges against my pal, labor cartoonist Mike Konopacki.  The right wing of Wisconsin wasn't satisfied with shutting down a political art exhibit and conference on the UW campus, they want to jail Mike Konopacki for his satire!

"Bully" is arriving in the theaters just in time!

ON THE ROAD AGAIN!!
I'm hoping to do a little West Coast tour -  Portland - Bay Area - Portland - in July.  July 1st (my birthday and Canada Day!) til the 19th...  for at least part of that tour I might have Mark Ross and/or Pickles (fabulous violin!) with me.

If you want to put a concert together for me or if you know someone who does --- let me know.

BENEFIT CONCERT

I was so touched by the generosity and love showered on me on March 20th by so many many talented jazz and blues greats in Pittsburgh at the Rex Theater!  The sound, lights and food were all fabulous.  The highlight, of course, was the music.

Divas!

Janelle Burdell, Etta Cox, Tania Grubbs, Maureen Budway, Jenny Wilson, Donna Peck, Freddye Stover, Sweaty Betty, Sheila Liming and Annie Sutton - truly the jazz & blues royalty of Pittsburgh (although, as my friend Chris Chandler would probably say, 'the blues have no room for monarchy.') And it was such a thrill to see Kenny Blake, Nelson Harrison, Skip Peck, Jeff Grubbs, Dave Yoho, Tom Hoffman, Miguel Sague II and Cha, Alex Peck, Jeff Ingersoll, Chico Ortiz, and so many many more!!

Endless thanks to all the musicians and especially to Maryellen Deckard and Dave Yoho for their endless hours of hard work putting this together.  And many thanks in advance to Dave Schuilenburg, who's editing the video from the show!

I'm hoping the proceeds from this benefit this will tide me over until I can support myself.  Many thanks to all of you who helped to sponsor this concert, or others.  Many thanks to all of you who have pushed the "DONATE" button at http://annefeeney.com or http://fellow-travelers-advisory.blogspot.com/ or bought my CDs or downloaded them at http://cdbaby.com/all/unionmaid, or just written a good-old-fashioned check to me when the spirit moved you.  My gratitude knows no bounds.  You're extraordinary.

FAMILY NEWS/BIRTHDAYS

Hi

You haven't heard from me since December 27th - I hope y'all are missing me as much as I miss you.  This is the time period I blocked off to balance my checkbook, reconcile all my credit card accounts, get my papers in order to donate to the UE Labor Archive at Pitt, identify all of my relatives in family photos for the next generation, scan them and save them.

Also, to collect and edit all the performance videos of mine into a DVD to generate some multi-media content for my next CD, finish the research and write about my grandfather's life, to commit some of my best family stories to video for our family archives, individually acknowledge all the wonderful gifts, donations and cards that you sent, and perhaps work on a memoir.

Instead I am limping along with one hand - nursing the shattered left wrist that I sustained in a disastrous fall down my (fourteen ... steep ... unfinished ... oak) cellar steps. I usually encourage you to write, and promise to write back.  I still hope you'll write to me, but for now I'm only typing when I must.

I hope I get to see you at the big upcoming concert in Pittsburgh March 20th!

Love and solidarity

Anne

I'm really hoping to be back to work by September or October, but I could really use a little help for these next few months.  Thanks so much for your generosity!

FANTASTIC HEALTH NEWS!

I think you all know how serious, and usually hopeless, a diagnosis of small cell lung cancer is.  I'm still having a hard time wrapping my head around the miraculous news I received this week.  There is no sign of cancer anywhere in my body, and hasn't been for more than six months.  They don't even want to see me again for six months!

I still have this cardiac arrhythmia that I'm going to deal with later this month, and an oh-so-mysterious lung infection which is sapping my strength ... and I'm fondly hoping that this wrist fracture hasn't ended my guitar playing... but I'm definitely not staring into my last spring...  yay!

Your support and generosity throughout this ordeal has been so uplifting.  I appreciate you standing by me while I'm unable to work.  How I wish every unemployed person, every striker, had a support network like mine!  You're the best!!!

SAD NEWS - REST IN PEACE
Edith Wilson
Rick Peduzzi
Tim Henderson
Tom Pigott
My heart aches with the loss of so many dear friends since I wrote to you last.  Edith Wilson was my friend, neighbor and sister/activist.  I loved her Mom, who passed many years ago.  Her terrific kids babysat my kids.  We shared many opinions, dreams, laughs, cups of coffee, and a couple times a room at the School of the Americas Annual Vigil. She died December 31, 2011.  The Pittsburgh activist community will miss her terribly.

Rick Peduzzi was a committed activist, a brilliant computer whiz, an extremely talented video editor, and one of my favorite people.  We have been comrades since the seventies, and I don't know what I'll do without him.  He died of a massive heart attack and stroke on January 18th. He was so much fun to hang out with - although his dedication to his work as IT guru at UE didn't give him much spare time.  Later 'gator.

Dear Tim Henderson was one of Texas' finest and most beloved songwriters.  He was a great friend and mentor, and was diagnosed with small cell lung cancer about the same time as I.  He died on November 1 of last year, survived by his wonderful family, including my friend Marian - Tim's beloved wife.

Some of you were lucky enough to go to Ireland with me on one of the seven tours arranged by Tom Pigott of Enchanted Way tours. It is with great sadness that I report Tom's untimely death on February 4th, 2012 while on an Irish-themed Caribbean cruise. Tom suffered a massive heart attack, and died almost instantly. He was loved by many, and his voice will be greatly missed.

FAMILY NEWS/BIRTHDAYS

Birthdays:
Mike Meadows, Barney McElhone, Shirley Shultz Myers, Mary McCahill Madera, Wendyl Jay, Finn Lane McCahill, Rob Shepherd, Ron Berlin, Tom Weldon, Suzy Edkins,
John Cunningham, Briget Shields, Bette Jacobson, Martha Shunn, BEV GRANT is 70!!, Mary Weldon, Kelly Grefenstette

You'll be relieved to know that my grandson, Sebastian, is still cute.  He just passed the 18 month mark.  He and his parents will be here in May for a short visit.

My husband arrived on Valentine's Day in time for dinner with me, Briget and Doug Shields, and Pat and Sandy (http://emmasrevolution.com). He'll be here until the beginning of April.  It's so great to have him here.

If you went to Folk Alliance this year you got a beautiful, superb-sounding shaker courtesy of Swan Percussion, owned by Mike Meadows - my daughter Amy's significant other.  The two of them spent a couple weeks in Zimbabwe while I was there.  We all enjoyed massive hospitality from Dan and Monique.

The Oscars Dinner happened again - this time with a *lot* of help from my friends.  Tret Fure, newly elected President of Local 1000 of the Musicians' Union, was in Pittsburgh for a house concert and joined us for dinner.

I hope to see lots of local folks at the Rex on the 20th.  I've got the wonderful Christie and Aodh Og (http://fourshillingsshort.com) here visiting right now.  Had a lovely visit from my beautiful niece Kimberly, another from my dear pals Martha Shunn and Karen Newman.  My best friend from college, Shirley Shultz was here last weekend.  I've got tons of wonderful friends coming to Pittsburgh for the United Association of Labor Educators conference.  Rae Sovereign, Elise Bryant, Judy Ancel and Jimmy Kelly are staying here the first night.

I'm flying to Brooklyn to be part of Bev Grant's 70th birthday celebration, and I'll stay with my cousin Karen McCahill-freshly returned from a visit to London to see her grandchildren, Antonito and Anabel - and their parents, Kristin and Antony.  Karen's daughter Erin just announced her engagement!  I love family weddings.

Til next month ---
Anne
